Vigilante is a law enforcement vehicle-based side mission available in Grand Theft Auto: Vice City.

Description[]

In order to start the mission, the player must find a law enforcement vehicle and press the button shown on the instruction text (platform dependent) to toggle the side mission on or off. Once the mission is started, the player is given the criminal's last known location and a timer. The police dispatcher will call out the initial spawning locations of the criminals at the beginning of each Vigilante level (e.g. "Suspect last seen in [insert location]"). In other games, the player is told via an on-screen message instead. The player must chase down and eliminate the criminal to pass the level and get a time bonus for the following level.

At the start of the mission, a criminal spawns in a random vehicle (clearly marked and shown on the radar) and attempts to evade the player. If the vehicle catches fire or is held in place for more than a couple of seconds, the occupant(s) will bail out and run or attempt to acquire new transport.

The mission ends in a failure if the player remains outside of a Law Enforcement vehicle for more than 60 seconds in one go, dies or is arrested, or time runs out. Each time a Vigilante mission is started, the player must begin at Level 1, and cannot continue a previously failed or cancelled mission.

In order to achieve the 100% Completion requirement, the player must complete 12 levels in a row.

Brown Thunder[]

Alternatively to land vehicles, players can start the side mission using the Hunter, and use its mounted machine guns and missiles to complete the mission faster. Its vehicle side mission is titled "Brown Thunder" in-game.

Aside from the side-mission name, the mission progression will be normally counted towards the Vigilante side mission. If the 100% Completion requirement is achieved through Brown Thunder, it won't be necessary to replay the land vehicle variant of the mission.

Reward[]

After completing level 12, the player's Body Armor points will be increased to 150.

Vehicles Available[]

The following vehicles can be used to start the Vigilante side-mission.
