The Untitled Grand Theft Auto V: Story Mode DLC, also teased as the GTAV Story Mode Updates on Rockstar Newswire, were cancelled downloadable content updates originally planned for Grand Theft Auto V. First announced on December 19, 2013, and originally planned to be released in 2014, along with the Heists update for Grand Theft Auto Online. [1][2] A few script codes for these unreleased content updates were unintentionally implemented into the game files with the 1.13/1.14 patch.

On November 12, 2014, according to CVG (who previously interviewed Leslie Benzies about the future of GTA Online before its release), an unknown Rockstar representative told Videogames Gameblog that the content update would be "at least on the level as The Lost and Damned and The Ballad of Gay Tony" with "12 to 20 hour chunk of all new scripted solo player missions", and scheduled to be released around the time of the PC version release of Grand Theft Auto V. [3]

On October 23, 2017, GameInformer published an interview article with then-director of design, Imran Sarwar. When asked about the DLC, he confirmed its cancellation due to their increased focus towards GTA Online as well as other projects, such as Red Dead Redemption II. [4]

Much of this content later influenced content updates in Grand Theft Auto Online, such as The Doomsday Heist in 2017 and The Diamond Casino Heist in 2019.

Content[]

Apparently there were pitches for three episodic packs: an "Agent" episode, a "Zombie Apocalypse" episode and an "Alien Invasion" Episode. The update would also include a brand new casino heist featuring all the three protagonists. [5]

DLC Selection Menu[]

In TU 1.14 Rockstar has accidentally left a prototype story DLC selection menu in game files. Before being removed, there was a possibility to enable it by modding the game, although selecting any of the options except main game would crash the game due to missing scripts and assets.

The menu is a very primitive black background with red text that highlights green upon selecting one of the options. The user has three choices: GTA, Trevor and Dead. The text strings used for the choices are reused placeholders.

The selection screen is coded to check if a DLC is present, if the player only owns DLC_AgentTrevor, it will display Trevor and GTA options, similarly if player only owns spZombies, it will display Dead and GTA options. If both of the DLC's are present then both will be enabled.

The leaked GTA V source code includes a slightly updated version of the menu. Instead of using placeholder strings, the menu says Clifford and Norman. Similarly instead of checking for spZombies, it checks for spNorman which is the codename of the Zombie DLC.

"Agent Trevor"/"Clifford" Episode[]

The "Agent Trevor" or "Clifford" Episode, is the most prominent one of the episodes and potentially the first to be developed. Many leftovers were found within the 1.14 patch scripts, including an entire missions list with codenames and coordinates for the starting locations tied to this specific episode (referred to as dlc_agenttrevor in the files). [6] The list was later updated with GTA V source code leak. The list includes:

A list of all characters that would appear in the DLC was also included.

This episode would later influence The Doomsday Heist update for Grand Theft Auto Online.

According to an April 2024 podcast featuring the main protagonists' voice actors, Steven Ogg confirmed that he had done some work on the DLC before stating it "just disappeared and they never followed up on it".

Another interview with Joe Rubino reveals that half of the expansion pack was finished, before being scrapped due to GTA Online being more profitable.

Assassination Pack[]

12 new assassination missions were discovered in game files. Originally they were supposed to release as separate content pack for Franklin, but the idea was scrapped and they got merged with Agent episode, becoming Trevor's new side missions. On 27 February 2014, Rockstar had teased at the end of the Business Update Newswire of upcoming content including "new Assassination and Flight School missions for Story Mode and much more..." [7]

  • 12 Assassination side missions.
    • assassin_police - Police Station Assassination (Start location: Hawick payphone)
    • assassin_retrieve - Kill and Retrieve (Start location: Payphone outside of Tequi-La-La, missing)
    • assassin_cablecar - Cable Car (Start location: Paleto Bay payphone)

    • assassin_vineyard - Vineyard Killing (Start location: Near vineyard, missing)
    • assassin_hunter - The Hunt (Start location: Payphone near cable car station in Paleto Bay)
    • assassin_skydive - Skydive Death (Start location: Paleto Bay payphone)

"Flight School Pack"[]

Originally the Flight School Update was planned to be a singleplayer expansion. Like mentioned above, it was also teased by Rockstar in 2014. In game files there are several references to a DLC Pack named spflightschool that no longer exists.

"Zombie Apocalypse"/"Norman" Episode[]

This article needs images of Arena War props.

This untitled "Zombie Apocalypse" episode is implied to be set in an alternative zombie apocalypse universe similar to Red Dead Redemption: Undead Nightmare, featuring Michael De Santa, Jimmy De Santa and Tracey De Santa as protagonists. Much like Agent Trevor, the source code leak has revealed several of the mission names and information about the DLC:

  • 18 Story missions.
    • nrm_sur_start - (Start location: Unknown)
    • nrm_sur_amanda - (Start location: Unknown)
    • nrm_sur_tracey - (Start location: Unknown)
    • nrm_sur_michael - (Start location: Unknown)
    • nrm_sur_home - (Start location: Unknown)
    • nrm_sur_jimmy - (Start location: Unknown)
    • nrm_sur_party - (Start location: Unknown)
    • nrm_sur_cure - (Start location: Unknown)
    • nrm_rescue_eng - (Start location: Unknown)
    • nrm_rescue_med - (Start location: Unknown)
    • nrm_rescue_gun - (Start location: Unknown)
    • nrm_sup_fuel - (Start location: Unknown)
    • nrm_sup_ammo - (Start location: Unknown)
    • nrm_sup_meds - (Start location: Unknown)
    • nrm_sup_food - (Start location: Unknown)
    • nrm_radio_a - (Start location: Unknown)
    • nrm_radio_b - (Start location: Unknown)
    • nrm_radio_c - (Start location: Unknown)

Many boarded buildings, run down props, and apocalyptic graffiti textures were added in the Arena War update for Grand Theft Auto Online inside the Maze Bank Arena, there's a theory that these might've been reused from the scrapped DLC, although there is not enough evidence to prove this claim.

"Alien Invasion" Episode[]

Nothing much is known about this untitled "Alien Invasion" episode, other than it was supposed to be an alien-themed storyline that never went into production, because Zombie idea was picked over it.

"LibertyV"[]

Planned map expansion that would introduce Liberty City to Grand Theft Auto V and Grand Theft Auto Online. It appears some work was already started, based on mentions in leaked files which prove extended map bounds, and an image that popped up in a now-deleted artists portfolio back in 2015.

A screenshot of Middle Park running on GTA V's version of RAGE Engine, found on Adrian Page's portfolio (No longer available).

"Prologue"[]

Planned map expansion that would reintroduce expanded North Yankton in GTA V. There are no leftovers in game files indicating that no progress was made on the DLC. Although Rockstar has created several unused NPC cop models for North Yankton that were scrapped from final game.

"Relationships Pack"[]

A scrapped DLC which has no known leftovers, meaning it's possible it was never started. Although a similar update was planned for Grand Theft Auto Online.

"Manhunt Pack"[]

A scrapped DLC which has no known leftovers, although it's possible it could've been just a cosmetic pack containing Manhunt themed masks for all three protagonists. A manhunt themed hockey mask was introduced with Last Team Standing update.

High Res Textures Pack[]

A scrapped free DLC exclusive to PC version that would feature increased quality for several textures in the game. Specific details are unknown.

Cosmetic DLCs[]

There were two planned paid cosmetic DLC's that would add new outfits to the game. Army outfit for Trevor and Clown outfit for Michael.

Weapon DLCs[]

An early prototype of Xbox 360 downloadable content (DLC) packs was accidently left unsecured on Xbox Live Arcade's PartnerNET, an internal Microsoft platform that allowed developers to access and test upcoming downloadable content and titles. This incident occurred on July 13, 2013, just prior to the release of Grand Theft Auto V.[8] Although initially ruled as fake, the files reemerged on October 21st, 2024.[vague] The leak primarily featured unused weapons, along with an initial version of the Atomic Blimp.[9] Each weapon was packaged separately, and with the exception of the Atomic Blimp DLC[10] and Assault Sniper DLC[11], they employed an older coding structure akin to that of Grand Theft Auto IV, necessitating manual adjustments for functionality. The other prototype DLC packs included:

The idea was later turned into Special/Collector's Edition bonus.

Teasers[]

In the original releases of Grand Theft Auto V, players can find two FIB Buffalos or a FIB Granger at the Satellite Relay Station at 10:00, along with some scientists and armed agents. The enhanced version replaced the vehicles with white Washingtons and Burritos, and removed the armed agents.

On the top of Mount Chiliad, players can find a mysterious mural hinting to the story episodes: An UFO icon representing the Alien Invasion episode, the cracked egg icon representing one of the protagonists' new life in a Zombie Apocalypse world, and the jetpack icon representing the Agent episode.

In an interview with Jack Thriller in 2014, Shawn Fonteno briefly talked about working on upcoming Grand Theft Auto V downloadable content.

Trivia[]

  • Horses were originally supposed to return in Agent Trevor expansion, although it appears that the developers changed their mind on this, leaving them to be cut again.
