The HVY Tunnel Boring Machine is an industrial machine in Grand Theft Auto V and Grand Theft Auto Online.
Description[]
As its name implies, the Tunnel Boring Machine is a large machine used to excavate tunnels. It is a massive yellow cylindrical machine resembling a large battery with a series of cutting wheels on the front to carve through solid rock and dirt. It is not based on any specific real-world TBM, but it seems to be a simplified and generic representation of the machines as a whole.
It appears to use a single shield cutterhead design, though the number of cutter disks is much smaller than typically seen on real-world models, with only about 15 cutter disks, as opposed to several dozen on real-world models. The outer shield is painted construction yellow with caution stripes around the cutterhead and HVY branding in very large letters. A worn out caution sign is also painted near the cutterhead of one machine, warning that misuse will result in death.
Because only the drilling end of the machine is visible emerging from the rock wall, the rest of the machine – consisting of conveyor belts for removing dirt and rock, pipelines for groundwater or mud removal, crew and maintenance equipment, electrical and propulsion systems, and the framework required to hold it all – is not modeled.
Performance[]
The Tunnel Boring Machines cannot be controlled by the player and serve purely as background props.

Locations[]
Grand Theft Auto V and Online[]
- Two Tunnel Boring Machines can be found in the new subway tunnel constructions near Pillbox North Station, which is itself under construction.
Trivia[]
- HVY also manufactures another tunneling machine, the HVY Cutter. Unlike the Tunnel Boring Machine, the Cutter can be driven by the player. It is depicted as a relatively compact subterrene-type vehicle able to quickly and easily drill through rock and concrete.
- The models for the Tunnel Boring Machine appear to actually be unfinished. Missing polygons and stretched textures can be found all over the models. Because of this, it's easy to see into the Tunnel Boring Machines and down the tunnels behind them.
