In Grand Theft Auto, accessible trams were considered early during the game's development but were not included in the final game, possibly explaining the absence of train services in San Andreas. The accessible trams were similar to the train systems in Liberty City and Vice City.

The design of the Tram is very generic, featuring four windows on the roof and a pink color scheme.

Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas[]

In Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, the Tram is based on the single-ended variant of the "California Car" cable car, the kind which typically runs on the Powell-Mason and Powell-Hyde lines of the San Francisco cable car system.

The Tram features a seemingly flat front end with circular headlights on the lower half and three windows on the upper half, followed by open sections on the front half, featuring bench seats, vertical frames and long steps. The rear half is enclosed and features additional bench seats and small access walkways, while the rear end features a smaller wall on the lower half and lacks physical tail lights (though two small lights can be seen on the outer edges at night). The roof is relatively curved in shape and features an elevated compartment in the center and two destination placards facing either side of the vehicle. The Tram uses twin-axle bogies.

The Tram has no driver (except in The Definitive Edition), does not carry passengers and it cannot be controlled by the player. In the PS2 version of the game, all Trams have Downtown as their destination, displayed on the sides of the cars, while the trams in the PC version have Garcia as their destination (this was fixed in The Definitive Edition, with the destination placards all displaying Downtown). The Tram will appear in the form of either a single or double car, and always with a white and red color scheme.

Although double tracked sections exist on the Tram's route that branch off from the single track, all Trams only use the inner tracks, and they can only be seen traveling counter-clockwise. There is a tram terminal in the King's district, but Trams are most frequently seen in the Garcia district. The ability to ride the Tram was cut from the game before release.

Performance[]

Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas[]

The Tram is completely indestructible and cannot be stopped by obstructions or derailed. However, there are occasions when the Tram will come to a complete stop, usually if it accidentally appears in cutscenes.

The Tram can be targeted with a Heat-Seeking Rocket Launcher, though the rockets have no effect. It is also possible to drain the "health" of a tram car to zero, after which rocket launchers will no longer lock onto the tram. Its rear can be set on fire through the use of Molotov Cocktails.

Technically being a vehicle, the Tram has its own handling line.

Trivia[]

Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas[]

  • In the files, the Tram is supposed to have four different destination signs as extras: in addition to the ones displaying Downtown and Garcia as destinations, there are other two displaying Calton Heights and Chinatown.

Bugs/Glitches[]

Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas[]

  • In GTA San Andreas, if the player climbs onto the Tram and takes a picture, Carl Johnson will fall into Blue Hell and, after a few moments, will land on the sidewalk beside the Tram.
  • Saving a derailed Tram in a garage will crash the game when the door is re-opened. This also happens if the player saves a Brown Streak or a Freight in a garage.
  • In Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy - The Definitive Edition, Trams will sometimes spawn with a driver. This appears to be an oversight by the developers, as the pedestrian "driving" is seated in a default position, intersecting the passenger seats at the front of the Tram.
