"Train" redirects here. For the vehicle literally named "Train", see Train (vehicle).
A train is a series of connected vehicles which run along a track, transporting passengers or goods. Trains have appeared throughout the Grand Theft Auto series in a variety of designs.
Trains in the GTA series are typically uncontrollable and follow a pre-defined path. For most games, the main (and sometimes only) form of train to appear in the game is a subway train and usually offers the player the ability to travel (or even fast travel) between destinations via the game's subway network.
2D Universe[]
In the first Grand Theft Auto, the only train to appear in the game is the perhaps aptly-named Train. It assumes the design of a diesel-electric locomotive which tows up to three coaches (also named Train). The train operates along an unnamed train network and stops at numerous underground and overground stations. It does not appear in the PlayStation 1 version due to hardware limitations.
The same train returns in Grand Theft Auto 2 with an updated design, operating along a similar train network around Anywhere City. Like in the first game, trains do not appear in the PlayStation 1 and Dreamcast versions.
3D Universe[]
The Train returns in Grand Theft Auto III, this time assuming the design of a subway car and operates around Liberty City, along elevated and underground lines. The same vehicle and network returns in Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories.
Trains do not make an appearance in Grand Theft Auto: Vice City or Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Stories as there are no rail services or networks.
Numerous trains appear in Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas:
- The Brown Streak train and its coaches are operated by the Brown Streak Railroad, which provides a passenger rail service across the State of San Andreas.
- The Freight train and its flatcars which operates as a cargo train, also running across San Andreas.
The Tram also appears in Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas as an uncontrollable street car operating across San Fierro.
With the exception of the Tram, all locomotives in GTA San Andreas can be operated by the player.
HD Universe[]
The Train does not return to Grand Theft Auto IV. Instead, the Subway takes its place as the subway train operating across the HD Universe depiction of Liberty City. It is operated by the Liberty City Transport Authority Like GTA III, the train itself cannot be driven by the player, but can be ridden.
In Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars, the subway train appears but cannot be interacted with. Unlike GTA IV, it is not considered a vehicle and is merely a static prop that is occasionally moved across the overground sections of subway line when the player is nearby.
In Grand Theft Auto V and Online, there are two trains operating across San Andreas:
- The Metrotrain (named as the "Freight Train" in-game) is operated by Los Santos Transit and serves as a passenger street car service. It operates along both underground and overground rails across Los Santos. Two Metrotrains are coupled back-to-back.
- The Freight Train is operated by Go Loco Railroad and serves as a freight train service across the State of San Andreas. The train can spawn with numerous non-passenger railroad cars, such as the boxcar or tanker (all named "Freight Train" in-game).
Like previous games, none of the trains in Grand Theft Auto IV or Grand Theft Auto V can be driven by the player. The Freight Train can be driven during several missions in Grand Theft Auto V and Online, however.
In Grand Theft Auto VI, there are at least two automated trains operating in Vice City:
- A VCIA train operates around Vice City International Airport.
- A VCMM train is operated by Vice City Metro Mule and travels around Downtown Vice City.
