The following is a timeline of events in the canon of the 2D Universe of the Grand Theft Auto series, in the order in which they occurred.

Note that the article does not include events from the 3D Universe and HD Universe games, as they are officially confirmed not to take place in the same canon.

1968

• Hippie students occupied an area to the west of the Sunrise district of San Andreas, and founded a commune. The dispute with the authorities ended when the Governor sent in a crack team of SWAT operatives, who rapidly ended the confusion. The area has subsequently become known as Soviet Hill.

1969

• The GTA London Protagonist returns to London after being sent to Vice City by the Crisp Twins to complete an unknown mission for them.
• The events of Grand Theft Auto: London 1969 take place.
  • The events of the Boys will be Thieves chapter take place.
    • A Mod Scooter is stolen by the GTA London Protagonist under orders of the Crisp Twins' contact.
  • The events of the Mods and Sods chapter take place.
    • Chalkie is killed by the GTA London Protagonist under orders of Pretty Charlie, for stealing and then dumping Harold Cartwright's stash of drinamyl.

1987

• Tortoise is sentenced to two years in a state penitentiary for the sexual harassment of some unwilling recruits.

1988

• Chesti-Kov's sentence for stealing two hundred million oil barrels from Siberian oil fields ends.

1989

• Jerkov is thrown out of the Russian army.
• Tetsuo is charged with violent assault after chopping the fingers off a chef and feeding them to him.
• Samuel Deever is investigated by the Vice City Police Department for cannibalism, theft of impounded narcotics and for enjoying all of the Police Academy movies.

1990

• Sunbeam steals leaked government waste disposal proposals.
• Tortoise gets five years in a state penitentary for inciting a riot.
• Samuel Deever is investigated by the Vice City Police Department for a malicious wounding of a fellow police officer.

1991

• Tetsuo is suspected of many violent punishment attacks.
• Samuel Deever is still being investigated by the Vice City Police Department for a malicious wounding of a fellow police officer.

1992

• Tetsuo is confirmed to be a Yakuza torturer, although the witness loses both eyes.
• Samuel Deever is still being investigated by the Vice City Police Department for a malicious wounding of a fellow police officer.
• Samuel Deever is investigated by the Vice City Police Department for urinating on a superior officer's desk.

1993

• Sunbeam bombs a Norwegian oil terminal.

1994

• Danny Zoo is arrested of suspected car theft and possession of firearms.

• Jerkov is linked to numerous underworld figures' deaths, and disappears.
• Trey Walsh marries Petula Shoe in Anywhere City, as long as Grand Theft Auto 2 takes place in 1999.

    • "Crazy" Jimmy Waterson robs a bank in south Park, Liberty City.
    • The South No Law Precinct is destroyed by the GTA Protagonist using a Tanker with explosives in order to kill a corrupt police chief.
    • Don Sonetti's lawyer and a few Sonetti Crime Family members are killed by the GTA Protagonist.
    • The Vercotti Crime Family contact's brother is killed by the GTA Protagonist in south Hackenslash, New Guernsey.
    • Pablo Vercotti robs a jewelry store in south Island City, Liberty City.
    • A train carrying Sonetti's shipment is destroyed, killing 127 civilians inside.

    • Sonetti's drugs are stolen and sold by the GTA Protagonist.
    • Don Sonetti, Cabot, Joe and Eddie are killed by the GTA Protagonist in a building explosion.

    • The GTA Protagonist survives a Train explosion caused by themselves under orders of a drugged Vercotti Family contact.

    • Samuel Deever tries to leave Vice City but is stopped by the ATF, forcing him to hide in his house in Banana Grove.
    • Samuel Deever is investigated by the Internal Affairs. The GTA Protagonist is told to dispose of four vehicles containing many bodies of Deever's victims, including eight VCPD officers, his ex-wife's boyfriend, and other unidentified people. All vehicles are dumped at the Rasta's territory in Little Bogota.

• Johnny Zoo is alleged to have a cocaine and amphetamine smuggling operation, along with arms theft and dealing.
• Danny Zoo is linked to a gambling racket and more gambling den murders.
• Jerkov is suspected of disemboweling rival gang figures.
• Sunbeam is suspected of large scale grand theft auto.
• Tortoise kidnaps an entire stadium of people, and there is no witness.
• Tetsuo is suspected of numerous shootings and tortures.
• Lodov is suspected of kidnapping an entire convent, for an unknown reason.
• Kov-Kov is suspected of a car bomb attack on a rival porn dealer.

• July 13: An unnamed private investigator arrives in Anywhere City to investigate the Zaibatsu Corporation and one of their bosses, Red Valdez.
• August 1: The unnamed private investigator investigates the SRS founder, Prof. Lars Von Barsdardson.
• September 3: The unnamed private investigator is locked at the Sunnyside Asylum.

• The J-Lab is built in Funabashi around this time.
