LCPD dispatch after Claude attacks Tanner

Tanner is a minor character in Grand Theft Auto III.

History[]

Background[]

Tanner is an undercover police officer working for the Liberty City Police Department.[1]

At some point prior to 2001, Tanner joined the Liberty City Police Department, later becoming an undercover officer. He is later tasked with following Yakuza co-leader Asuka Kasen and becomes her chauffeur.

Events of Grand Theft Auto III[]

Asuka later discovers Tanner's true allegiance and orders Claude to kill him on the streets of Staunton Island. Asuka leaves a note for Claude, telling him to find Tanner at Kenji's Casino. When Claude eventually arrives at the casino, Tanner is seen jogging down a staircase, rushing towards his car in an attempt to make a getaway. Claude pursues and attacks, which leads to him catching and killing Tanner on the streets.

Character[]

Influence[]

Tanner's name is a reference to the Driver protagonist, John Tanner, who is also referenced in Grand Theft Auto: Vice City and Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas.

Tanner is given a female pedestrian's running animation, an obvious reference to the strange way that Tanner walks in the Driver games.

Trivia[]

  • Tanner is one of the select few single-mission target characters in the 3D Universe to have a unique model, instead of a generic pedestrian one.
  • When he rushes towards his vehicle, he runs like a male pedestrian. However, after being forced out of his vehicle, he runs using "Chunky" Lee Chong's unique "panic" running animation.[2]
