|Not to be confused with The People's Republic of China, commonly refered to as China.|
The Republic of China (commonly referred to as 'Taiwan') is a state in East Asia. It is a democratic republic currently governed by the Democratic Progressive Party. Its capital is Taipei, and its neighboring states include the People's Republic of China (PRC) to the north-west, Japan to the north-east, and the Philippines to the south.
Taiwan, under the title of 'China', was a UN founding member state and remained as a member until 1971, when its China-title membership was taken by The People's Republic of China. Currently, Taiwan is a non-UN member state, recognized as the legitimate government of China by only 14 out of 193 UN members states under the One-China policy.
The islands governed by Taiwan are also claimed to be under the ownership of The People's Republic of China. Taiwan also lays claim to mainland territories governed by The People's Republic of China and Mongolia.
