Staunton Plaza is an unfinished building complex in Fort Staunton, Liberty City constructed by Panlantic Construction Company and sold by Fort Staunton's Premier Real Estate, located at a large construction site.
Prior to 1998, the site's location was part of the neighborhood of Little Italy and several businesses stood in its place. However, during 1998, Toni Cipriani and 8-Ball planted several bombs in the abandoned subway system beneath Fort Staunton at Donald Love's behest so as to destroy the area, in order for Love to be contracted by the city to rebuild the area and re-ignite his career in real estate development.
By 2001, Fort Staunton is almost completely redeveloped, with only the Staunton Plaza incomplete (the poster on the building site claims it will open "next fall"). Due to Panlantic's ties with the Cartel, they control the site during the majority of Grand Theft Auto III, until the Grand Theft Aero mission, when it is taken over by Asuka Kasen and the Yakuza.
After the Yakuza take over, Asuka uses the building as the start point for the remaining missions she gives Claude.
- The plaza was believed to be a reference to the World Trade Center site, which was destroyed in the September 11 attacks on New York City in 2001. This is unlikely due to the game being in development long before the attacks.[ ]
