The State of Liberty, also known as Liberty State[2] and Liberty City State[3], is a state located in the United States of America, featured in Grand Theft Auto IV, Episodes from Liberty City and Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars.

Overview[]

Aside from Liberty City, the Grand Theft Auto series does not explore other locations within Liberty State. However, there are mentions of areas such as Upstate Liberty and The Carraways, which are likely inspired by Upstate New York and The Hamptons, respectively.

History[]

Not much history is known about Liberty State, other than the establishment of present-day Liberty City as New Rotterdam.

In 2013, Weazel News reports that a devastating storm impacted Liberty State, particularly Liberty City, as it flooded many vehicles, homes, and businesses.

While Pavel introduces the GTA Online Protagonist to the Kosatka, he mentions that he once fabricated a sailing accident for the Liberty State Governor.

Nearby States[]

The neighboring State of Alderney is located to the west of Algonquin. The section of Alderney seen in Grand Theft Auto IV includes Alderney City, which is inspired by Hudson County, New Jersey.

Scrapped GTA IV Tri-State Concept[]

Nik Taylor's early concept drawings of the Tri-State area.

When GTA4 first hit the drawing board, Rockstar North's art director opened a map featuring Liberty City surrounded by countryside the size of New York state. "It was fucking enormous," says [Sam] Houser. "You had the Catskills, the Adirondacks.... I'd only been to the Adirondacks once — it took me six hours to get there. It's fucking miles away." The megamap was the logical step after San Andreas and its super-sized three-city world.

During the early concepts prior to the start of Grand Theft Auto IV's development, Rockstar North's original idea was to create a condensed version of the entire New York metropolitan area (a.k.a. the Tri-State area), including the neighboring states of New Jersey and Connecticut as part of the game's setting.

Early drawings of the concept Tri-State map were included in the official website of Rockstar North's lead artist Nik Taylor, including areas of Upstate New York, including the Adirondack Mountains, the Catskill Mountains and the city of Buffalo.

The idea was later scrapped in favor of a more grounded and dark themed storyline in Liberty City. A portion of State of Alderney (inspired by the Hudson County area of New Jersey) is kept for the game's Mafia-themed portion of the storyline inspired by the The Sopranos.
