The State of Liberty, simply referred to as The State and the Liberty City State in-game, is a state located in the United States of America, featured in Grand Theft Auto III, Grand Theft Auto Advance and Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories, and plays a secondary role in Grand Theft Auto: Vice City and Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas.
Description[]
Liberty City's state is located on the Atlantic Coast of the Eastern United States. Unlike its real-life counterpart and alternative universe equivalents, Liberty took two hundred years to be properly developed as a prominent location in the country.
The city of the same name located within the state, Liberty City, was established circa 1798.[1] However, by 1869 (the year when the telephone was invented), the landscape where Liberty City is located in the present day consisted of a church, a cow pasture and three houses.[2]
The state of Connecticut in New England[3] and the ambiguous Rust Belt state hosting Carcer City are located in proximity of the region in which the State of Liberty is located.[4]
Influence[]
The state is an ambiguous hybrid of several real-life U.S. East Coast states, with areas alluding to Rockstar North's homeland Scotland, United Kingdom. The state's main inspiration is State of New York, as evidenced by official artwork for Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories.
