The Skateboard was a weapon and vehicle that was dropped during the development of Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas. It was meant to be introduced to the player in the mission Madd Dogg's Rhymes.[1][2]
Madd Dogg's downhill driveway is referred to as a "Skate Track," further reinforcing that CJ was to ride the skateboard during his escape from the mansion.[3]
There is little leftover data related to riding the skateboard. The skateboard is developed enough that it is specified to which surface is skateable. In the gta3.img file, the animation file for the skateboard exists.
On the other hand, the skateboard does exist as a fully functional weapon except in the PS2 version, where only the HUD icon remains. However, it is normally disabled and cannot be found anywhere. It can be enabled by swapping it with an existing melee weapon in the game files.
There was also a skater pedestrian who was dropped from Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas. Although his true purpose is officially unknown, he almost certainly would have interacted with the skateboard, and likely would have dropped it upon death. It's very probable that he was cut when the skateboard was cut. No model or texture for this pedestrian exists in the game files anymore, but his leftover voice lines remain, and can even be coded to be spoken by another pedestrian.
A female pedestrian in San Fierro (SWFYST) makes constant references to skateboarding, as a possible reference to the San Francisco skate scene of the 1990s, and how few female skateboarders there were at the time. [4]
Suburban and ProLaps have references to skateboarding in the texture/model files, as a stack of ProLaps boxes in both stores is internally named as "Skate_Cubes"[5] and two of the racks with misplaced Cok cigarette box textures are actually skateboard deck racks.[6] The shoeboxes in Suburban have a TXD file named "Skateshop."[7] Some of the brands that can be purchased in the game are referenced by the cut skater pedestrian, with the most noticeable one being Mercury, mostly because during development, CJ could have purchased three different Mercury t-shirts.
The skateboarder pedestrian is introduced in Grand Theft Auto IV, and can often spawn with a backpack. Texture files for this backpack reveal textures for a skateboard, suggesting it was once again removed; given Grand Theft Auto IV's limited activities in comparison to San Andreas, it likely would have only been seen as an unusable prop here.
In GTA Online, an unusable skateboard could be seen on shelves in the High Life Update high-end apartments. However, it was later removed to make way for the heist wardrobe in the Heists update.
