Various shipping containers in Grand Theft Auto V.

A shipping container (or simply container) is a large metal crate designed to store items and be transported via freight. Shipping containers have appeared in some form throughout the Grand Theft Auto series.

3D Universe[]

Grand Theft Auto III[]

Containers are found around port areas and warehouses in Liberty City. They appear either without markings or as East/West Shipping Co. U.S.A.-branded containers, and are found in blue, yellow and red colors.

Grand Theft Auto: Vice City[]

Containers are found around port areas and freight depots in Vice City. They appear either without markings or as East/West Shipping Co. U.S.A.-branded containers, and are found in blue, yellow and red colors.

Containers are found scattered around San Andreas. The Da Nang Boys Freighter is moored in San Fierro and has 32 rows of containers on its upper deck. Containers with an unique rusty appearance are found in several areas of Ocean Docks and Los Santos International Airport. Shipping company-branded containers are absent in the game.

Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories and Vice City Stories[]

Containers are found around port areas and warehouses in Liberty City and Vice City, found in blue, yellow and red colors. Shipping company-branded containers are absent in both titles.

HD Universe[]

Grand Theft Auto IV and Episodes from Liberty City[]

Shipping containers appear scattered across the map as static and non-interactive props. Large stacks of shipping containers are found in groups around port areas and warehouses in Liberty City and the State of Alderney, appearing in a variety of colors, including red, yellow, white and blue.

Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars[]

Shipping containers appear in the same form as in Grand Theft Auto IV, found in the same areas of Liberty City. Containers are also seen on barges and partially visible inside cargo hatches of several ships.

Grand Theft Auto V and Online[]

Shipping containers appear scattered across the map as static and non-interactive props. Large stacks of shipping containers are found in groups around the Port of Los Santos, particularly at Jetsam Terminal in Terminal, and Pier 400 in Elysian Island. Containers generally appear in 20 foot and 40 foot sizes and appear in a variety of colors, including red, orange, grey, blue, green and yellow. Containers are also found on most ships, including the SS Bulker, Ocean Motion and Daisy Lee.

Some smaller shipping containers (such as the blue 20 foot ThriftEX and red 10 foot Merryweather Security containers) are not purely static and can be pushed around or lifted. The Cargobob (and any of its variants), as well as the DH-7 Iron Mule in GTA Online, is capable of using its hook to connect to and lift shipping containers. The Dock Handler serves as a specialised reach stacker capable of coupling up to containers and moving them around. Like other transportable items, the shipping container will despawn once it is taken over 2,000 meters away from its original spawn location[ref?ref? This fact is likely to be disputed and needs a source for confirmation.].

Some 20 foot and 40 foot containers appear without doors at one or both ends, allowing the player to enter or drive through them. The smaller 10 foot containers can also be damaged enough that the doors break open.

Some containers are found mounted to the back of trailers and railroad well cars, both static and towable. The majority of containers on the back of trailers and railroad cars cannot be removed, however, some of the aforementioned smaller containers are found on the back of static flatbed trailers and can be lifted or pushed off. A grey, unmarked container is found permanently attached to the back of the towable container trailer. The Dock Trailer is designed to spawn with or without an orange container, however, in-game it only spawns with it attached.

The player is sometimes required to open containers during certain missions in GTA Online. In First Dose 6 - Off the Rails, the player cuts their way inside shipping containers carried by well cars after the train is derailed. Inside some of the containers are chemicals the player is required to steal.

Jason can be seen interacting with a shipping container at PortViceCity in a single clip from the September 2022 leaks. In the clip, he is seen using a Cut-Off Tool to break open the doors of a container, inside of which is a Sanchez. The developer is then seen placing and moving items within the container, including piles of cash, which Jason then collects and stores in his Loot Bag.[1]

Lucia is seen jumping onto the back of a moving flatbed trailer with a shipping container in the game's second trailer. The container's doors are open, revealing a Tempesta inside it.
