Secrets and Easter Eggs in Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Stories

The following is a list of secrets, Easter eggs, and hidden trivia references in Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Stories.

Easter Eggs[]

	99 Red Balloons The collectibles in the game are represented in the form of Red Balloons. This is a reference to the 1984 hit song by Nena called "99 Luftballons", released in English as "99 Red Balloons", which was featured on the radio station Wave 103 in Grand Theft Auto: Vice City.
	Beverley Hills Cop A billboard for a movie called Los Santos Fop can be found in Ocean Beach. The movie's name and cover are a parody of Beverly Hills Cop, a movie released in 1984, the same year GTA Vice City Stories is set.
	Blox Blox is a detergent brand in the game seen in stores such as Verdi Groceries and Fidl. The Blox logo^[1] and name is a parody of the real-life company Clorox.
	Candybox is a company manufacturing chocolate bars in the game. They can be seen in supermarkets such as Verdi Groceries and Fidl. They are a parody of Hershey.
	Che Guevara In Little Havana, there is a mural of Cuban leader Umberto Robina on a wall, designed to resemble rebel leader Che Guevara, with the words "Libre Havana" (Free Havana) beside it.
	CJ's Outfit The Trailer Trash outfit, which is obtained after completing the mission "D.I.V.O.R.C.E." for Louise Cassidy, heavily resembles Carl Johnson's default tank top and jeans worn at the beginning of Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas.
	Diego Armando Maradona It may be a simple coincidence, but one cannot help but notice that the Mendez brothers have Diego and Armando as their names, and that the star player in the 1986 FIFA World Cup was the Argentinian soccer player Diego Armando Maradona.
	Ducum Inn The hotel, in which Gonzalez stays, is called the Ducum Inn. The name is a pun on the greeting "Do Come In", with "cum" being a slang term for semen.
	E.T. The Extraterrestrial In the mission "The Audition", the Vance brothers try to escape the police by using a ramp to jump onto the building over the impound. While in the air, the brothers pass by a Full Moon billboard in slow motion, referencing a famous scene in the 1982 movie E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial.
	FIDL Fidl is a spoof of Lidl, a German supermarket chain with stores worldwide. The store is selling German products with sexually suggestive names. FIDL is also a play on the word fiddle, with "fiddler" being slang for a masturbator, or a child molester.
	Köck Köck is a brand of cheese in the game. In the mission "Say Cheese", Vic takes part in a commercial riding a Jetski and a PCJ 600 around Vice City. The final shot of the commercial shows Köck cheese on the doorstep of a house with a male voice saying "All because she can't get enough...".
	Little Willie There is a gyrocopter called Little Willie. Its name and design could take inspiration from a similar looking aircraft called "Little Nellie" from the fifth James Bond film You Only Live Twice.
	Quube A billboard advertising a new puzzle sensation called "Quube" is a spoof on the Rubik's Cube that became famous in the early 1980s. Also, Falik sounds like "Phallic", which means penis-shaped.
	RLAX The Winner Outfit is unlocked after completing the final mission Last Stand. The text on the T-Shirt "RLAX" is probably a reference to Rockstar since it is often shortened as "R"(R-Star). It could also be a reference to the T-Shirt worn by a Haitian gang member. It is also a reference to the British New Wave band Frankie Goes to Hollywood, who were known for their sloganed shirts,^[2] and their song "Relax", which is featured in-game on the radio station The Wave 103. Also, there is a billboard in that can be found in Vice Point that reads "RLAX". The company that produces these billboards is PTGateaux, which is a reference to JCDecaux, the real-life company that makes billboards.
	Raw Deal The name of the film Short Deal: Don's Revenge is a parody of Raw Deal, a film released in 1986. But the pose and the red headband of the hero are references to Rambo: First Blood, a film released in 1982.
	Ray Liotta Advertised in Little Havana is a film called Ray the Otter, which sounds like Ray Liotta, the voice actor of Tommy Vercetti. Judging by the title, and the drinking and smoking otter, it is possible that the film may be inspired by either the 1972 X-rated animated film Fritz the Cat or the 1986 live action film Howard the Duck.
	Release Gum Release bubblegum is advertised on a billboard outside Fort Baxter Air Base and is sold in all Verdi Groceries and Fidl stores. Their slogan and name are a clear reference to ejaculation during oral sex, by enhancing the flavor of the semen when shot (or maybe released, hence the name) in the mouth.
	Rockstar Building There is a building in Downtown Vice City on which, when nighttime comes, the player can see a bright neon sign reading Rockstar.
	Scarface The character of Armando Mendez could take inspiration from Alejandro Sosa, the drug dealer from the well-known hit film Scarface. Among their similarities are their physical appearance, both wear a white suit, their personality, and the fact that they are both Bolivian.
	T. J. Hooker In multiplayer mode, there is a character called "T.J. Sucker". This is a take on the 1980s television cop show T. J. Hooker.
	The Godfather Barzini's Ristorante Italiano could be a reference to the character Don Barzini, the head of one of New York's five Mafia families in the film The Godfather. Another reference to the film could be found on the promotional website, ViceCityStories.com; in the news section dedicated to the Trailer Park Mafia, the reporter mentions "...leave animal heads in their beds...", an obvious reference to the famous scene in the film where a horse's head is left on the bed as a sign of blackmail.
	The Secret of my Success The name and poster of the film The Secret of My Shortness parody the movie The Secret of My Success with Michael J. Fox, released in 1987. Kenny Barty, the star of the film, is a dwarf, and his name is derived from the dwarf actors Kenny Baker and Billy Barty.
	Tommy's Shirt In The Compound safehouse, which is obtained after the mission "D.I.V.O.R.C.E.", the player can find a Hawaiian shirt similar to the one worn by Tommy Vercetti from GTA Vice City; however, this shirt has red parrots on it.

	"Blitzkrieg" & "Blitzkrieg Strikes Again" Blitzkrieg is a German word which translates into English as flash war or lightning war. It was also the name for the Nazi's "dominate-and/or-destroy" war tactic. Throughout the Second World War, the Luftwaffe used the Blitzkrieg tactic to destroy other European air bases and attempt to gain air superiority over that nation.^[3]^[4]
	"Brawn of the Dead" The name of the mission is taken from the 1978 horror film Dawn of the Dead, or even the 2004 horror spoof Shaun of the Dead, as the words 'Brawn', 'Dawn' and 'Shaun' all rhyme. The objective of the mission, however, strongly points to Dawn of the Dead, because both the mission and the movie took place at a mall.
	"D.I.V.O.R.C.E." Reference to the song "D-I-V-O-R-C-E" by Tammy Wynette.
	"Domo Arigato Domestoboto" Reference to the Styx song "Mr. Roboto".
	"Farewell To Arms" Reference to Ernest Hemingway's 1929 semi-autobiographical novel A Farewell to Arms.
	"Fear the Repo" Reference to the 1976 Blue Öyster Cult song "(Don't Fear) The Reaper".
	"Got Protection?" Reference to Got Milk? and safe sex and condoms, so is the fact the mission relates to hookers.
	"Havana Good Time" An obvious pun on the phrase, "Having a good time", Havana being the capital city of Cuba. The phrase is also uttered frequently in the song "Don't Stop Me Now" by Queen.
	"Home's on the Range" Reference to the classic cowboy song "Home on the Range".
	"In the Air Tonight" An obvious reference to Phil Collins' song "In the Air Tonight", which he performs at the concert during the mission.
	"Kill Phil" Reference to the film Kill Bill.
	"Kill Phil: Part 2" Reference to the film Kill Bill: Vol 2.
	"Light My Pyre" Likely a reference to the song "Light My Fire" by The Doors.
	"Money for Nothing" Reference to the Dire Straits song "Money for Nothing".
	"O, Brothel, Where Art Thou?" Reference to the movie O Brother, Where Art Thou?.
	"Papi Don't Screech" Reference to the Madonna song "Papa Don't Preach" released in 1986.
	"Purple Haze" Reference to the song "Purple Haze" by The Jimi Hendrix Experience.
	"So Long Schlong" The name of this mission is a clear pun on Reni's sex change, from a man to a woman.
	"Takin' Out the White-Trash" Reference to the idiom "Taking out the trash" and the derogatory slur "White trash"
	"The Bum Deal" The mission's name is a double entendre; it refers both to the fact that Bryan Forbes set Vic and Lance up, and it most likely is also a reference to anal sex, which is associated with homosexual men, since the mission is set in a gay bar.
	"Turn on, Tune in, Bug out Reference to "Turn on, tune in, drop out", a phrase commonly attributed to counter-culturist Timothy Leary.

	Domestobot In the mission "Domo Arigato Domestoboto", there are multiple hidden references: 1. The Domestobot bears a strong resemblance to the Robotic Operating Buddy (commonly known as R.O.B.) accessory for the Nintendo Entertainment System. 2. Sometimes the text that appears when the player assumes control of the Domestobot says "Flux Capacitor at 110%", referencing the film Back to the Future. 3. The code for the safe is 8423. If this code is typed into a mobile phone with predictive text, it will produce the word 'vice'.
	Phil Collin's Death Failing the mission "In the Air Tonight", the player won't see Phil Collins die, only him yelling "oh no!" before the message 'Failed' with the caption "Phil definitely felt it coming in the air tonight...".
	Rock "Star" Logo At nighttime, if the player looks up at the sky, they will notice a constellation forming the shape of the letter 'R', referencing the Rockstar Games logo.
	Under Boat Sign In Viceport, a reference to The Hidden Sign can be found inside of a truck trailer (see Under Boat Sign).
	Van Khoff Penis At nighttime, the player can see the windows on the Van Khoff On The Beach hotel light up in the form of male genitalia. This only appears on the PSP version.

Smilies[]

Next to Hyman Memorial Stadium, there is a small platform area that can be reached using the stairs. On the platform the player will find a small sign that leads them to find 10/11 smilies^[5], 10 on the PSP and 11 on the PlayStation 2, and a message from the developers thanking the players for playing the game. The sign's message also significantly differs between the PSP and the PlayStation 2 versions.

11		ONLY ON THE PLAYSTATION 2: On the roof of the Vice City News building is a small landing platform. A window of the joining building is not solid. If the player jumps through it, Vic will be standing in a room (which had already existed in GTA Vice City) which in it there is a small column on which top is a chocolate Easter Egg. This easter egg in GTA Vice City Stories is under construction, as it takes place 2 years earlier than GTA Vice City. It is worth noting that this Easter Egg only exists on the PlayStation 2 version.
