The team is based on the San Francisco Giants. Their logo also bears a resemblance to that the Giants. The name may also be a reference to the football team the Green Bay Packers, although the Green Bay Packers are based in Wisconsin.
In Grand Theft Auto IV, civilians in Beechwood City and on Dukes Boulevard can be seen wearing Packers gear, with the name of one player, LaVergne, appearing on the back of their shirts.
