Ned Braden, mostly referred to as The Kid, is a cut character scheduled to appear as the protagonist of Grand Theft Auto Advance.[1] He is the first iteration of Mike.
Description[]
Kid is only referred to by his nickname by mission bosses instead of his real name.
The Kid's name originates from the cast of characters from George Roy Hill's 1977 film Slap Shot (in his case Michael Ontkean's character "Ned Braden"), suggesting this name was always a placeholder name.
History[]
Events of Grand Theft Auto Advance (2003)[]
Kid follows a similar path as Mike, attempting to solve the mystery behind the death of his best friend and mentor Reg Dunlop in a car bomb explosion in Portland, although with multiple differences in the outcome of the storyline.
Leftovers[]
Billboards advertising a movie titled "Kid: Tuf Luv" can be found in Pike Creek, Shoreside Vale, featuring a character artwork matching the in-game character design and having a noticeable resemblance with Mike's character dialogue artwork. This artwork may or may not have been Kid's original appearance, hinted by the title of the movie.
Variables for mission dialogue text for Vinnie's pager messages are labelled as pager_rn*
in the game files (observed via hex editing). As seen in the Design Document, "rn" stands for "Reg & Ned", the original name of Vinnie's mission strand. In many other missions, the variables for Mike's dialogue prompts are usually named brief_Ned*
in the game files (observed via hex editing), meaning this early name survived up until late development.
