The Micro SMG is a weapon appearing in Grand Theft Auto III, Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, Grand Theft Auto Advance, Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories and Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Stories.
Description[]
The Micro SMG has appeared in all games in the 3D Universe. The weapon's name on the HUD has changed various times as it recurred through the series:
- In GTA III, the submachine gun is named Uzi.
- In GTA Vice City, the submachine gun is named Uz-1.
- In GTA Advance, the submachine gun is named Uz-I.
- In GTA San Andreas, GTA Liberty City Stories and GTA Vice City Stories, the submachine gun is named Micro SMG.
Across the 3D Universe, the Micro SMG is always the cheapest and most traditional submachine gun of every game, as opposed to the more contemporary and expensive SMG, as well as being a common sight in the hands of many gangs in the later missions throughout the games.
Design[]
The Micro SMG is based on variants of the real-life Uzi:
- In Grand Theft Auto III and Grand Theft Auto Advance, the Uzi/Uz-I is modeled after a Micro Uzi (with the folding stock removed), an even smaller version that has some resemblance with the MAC-10.
- In Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories and Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Stories, the Uz-1/Micro SMG is modeled after a full-size Uzi, complete with a stock and a large barrel handle on the lower side, in front of the trigger grip.
- In Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, the Micro SMG is modeled after a Micro Uzi, but lacks a stock hinge on its rear. It replaces the Mac 10's role from Grand Theft Auto: Vice City due to the Uz-1 model being cut during development.
The weapon is favored by gang members, and law enforcement units including the SWAT and Vice Squad.
It is one of the few weapons that used real-life names in the original releases of Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, appearing as the Uzi 9mm in the day-one v1.40 release for the PlayStation 2. It was renamed Uz-1 in later releases. Rockstar North remodeled and renamed the weapon in later versions of GTA Vice City, possibly to avoid copyright and trademark infringements.
Performance[]
The Micro SMG behaves differently depending on the game in which it appears. In Grand Theft Auto III, it takes the form of the compact Uzi, which allows the player to run while firing. This version holds 25 rounds, and has a moderate rate of fire and damage.
The Grand Theft Auto: Vice City rendition is a full-sized model of the real-life Uzi, which means the player can only fire while in a stationary position. It holds 30 rounds, and has a high rate of fire equal to that of the Mac 10. When compared to it, it deals higher damage (the same as in GTA III), at the expense of not allowing Tommy to run while firing (while the Mac 10 does).
In Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, the player can run while firing the weapon, since this version is a compact Uzi. It also has higher magazine capacity of 50 rounds, but has a rather slow rate of fire equal to that of the Tec-9. Its capabilities can be quite lethal at close range, but it will often miss the target at longer ranges due to its heavy recoil, so it is advised to fire short bursts at distances. Depending on the weapon skill, some of the weapon's attributes change:
- At 'Poor' (default) weapon skill, the Micro SMG has similar stats to other renditions, albeit with a lower rate of fire and range.
- After reaching the 'Gangster' weapon skill with the Micro SMG, the weapon slightly improves in accuracy and range (both lock-on and weapon).
- After reaching the 'Hitman' weapon skill, Carl Johnson will dual-wield them, making them even more effective due to the increased fire rate. Lock-on range also improves slightly and matches with the overall range, and magazine size increases from 50 to 100 rounds.
In Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories, the Micro SMG behaves like its counterpart from GTA Vice City. However, in Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Stories, it has a lowered rate of fire (along with the Mac 10), which means it is outclassed by the SMG in nearly every way, since the latter has the same fire rate but deals much higher damage.

The Micro SMG model from Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, also known as the Uz-1, was intended to make a return in Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas.
The only leftover of this weapon model in the final game lies in the Big Smoke's Crack Palace interior, where it is attached to the hands of Big Smoke's statue as part of a single model.

A second returning SMG class weapon from Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, the Mac 10, was renamed during development as the new "Micro SMG". Developer notes for the weapon pickup locations (on the uncompiled initial.sc file) refer to the existing "Micro SMG" in the final version as the Mac 10[1][2][3][4], as well as in-game dialogue for Nines and AK's and an unused dialogue for Photo Opportunity, confirming the replacement of the weapon. The HUD icon for the existing "Micro SMG" resembles the Mac 10 rather than its Uzi Pistol-inspired design.
