The Metal Detector is a gear featured in Grand Theft Auto Online as part of the continuation of The Criminal Enterprises update.
Description[]
Grand Theft Auto Online[]
It is a small hand-held metal detecting device, heavily based on the Digiscanner used during GTA V's Epsilon Program side-mission "Chasing the Truth", but with the antenna removed and buttons replaced. The Metal Detector is also internally named "digiscanner
", like the original Digiscanner.
The device has a control panel consisting of yellow directional buttons and red and blue LED lights. It flashes light blue when it detects metal objects, and red when it does not. There is a large display screen consisting of ten horizontal blue bars signfying the distance to the detected object, with 14 yellow LED lights which flash in sequence and increases in tempo as the player nears the object. It emits a beeping sound which increases in tempo until the object is found when it becomes a continuous high-pitched beep.
Performance[]
Grand Theft Auto Online[]
The Metal Detector itself is harmless, as it does not have any sort of offensive capabilities. The device can only be equipped when within the marked search areas for Buried Stashes on Cayo Perico while scoping a heist. As it cannot be equipped outside the circumference of the search zone, its effective range cannot be measured.

Trivia[]
- The Metal Detector was originally intended to appear alongside the Buried Stashes collectible as part of the Los Santos Tuners update, over a year before its actual release. The sound data for the Metal Detector, alongside the mission instructions and script data for the mini-game could be found in the game's files with the release of the Los Santos Tuners update in 2021, before finally becoming available, albeit with minor changes, in The Criminal Enterprises update in 2022.[1]
