This page documents the Official GTA Wiki Manual of Style on category pages.
Formatting
Since 2023, GTA Wiki has utilized a category tree system which allows users to navigate up, down and between branches of content.
Most categories have three separate branches: by game, by type and by characteristics. Every article must have:
- At least one "by game" category (e.g., Category:Vehicles in GTA IV) to distinguish which games the content appears in.
- One "by type" category (e.g., Full-size cars) to distinguish what type of content the article is about.
- As many "by characteristics" categories as is necessary (such as Gang vehicles), to tag the article with additional information.

Types of categories
Branches
These are the main content groups in the category tree. Branches are split into by game
, by type
and by characteristic
sub categories.
All in-game content can be categorized in one of the 12 current branches:
- Animals
- Buildings
- Businesses
- Characters
- Gameplay
- Items
- Locations
- Media
- Organizations
- Structures
- Vehicles
- Weapons
There are several other branches for content not inherently appearing in-game (such as upcoming or beta content):
The main GTA Wiki category contains branches for wiki content, such as files and templates:
- Archived content - archived pages, including the former forum pages.
- Categories - different types of categories.
- Copyright - documentation and templates pertaining to copyright information.
- Grand Theft Auto - game article content.
- Help - help pages.
- Files - images and videos.
- Main Page - main page embedded content.
- Maintenance - cleanup and Manual of Style.
- Real-world articles.
- Staff - GTA Wiki Staff pages and members.
- Templates - template pages.
- Policy - GTA Wiki Policy pages.
By game
Each branch contains a by game category. These are generally only used on articles. At least one by game
category must be used on an article to assign it to a specific game. All by game
categories are grouped under their respective branches and games.
These categories allows users to browse a certain type of content by game. They are also used by dynamic page lists in order to separate specific sub categories by game where necessary.
By game categories should be arranged by the release chronology. On the "by game" category pages themselves (i.e. Category:Vehicles in GTA IV), this can be achieved by appending | XX
(where XX represents the release number) to the parent category. For example, GTA IV is the 11th game in the series, so this particular category can be arranged in chronological order with [[Category:Vehicles by game| 11]]
The space before the number prevents the category from being arranged under a numbered heading in the parent category.

By type
Each branch contains a by type category. These are generally only used on articles. Only one by type
category must be used on an article to assign it to a specific sub category of the main branch (for example, Category:Radio towers, a type of structure).
By characteristics
Each branch contains one or several by characteristics categories. These are generally only used on articles. Multiple characteristics categories can be used on a single article to tag it with additional information (for example, Johnny Klebitz can be categorized under both Category:Bikers and Category:Protagonists, two characteristics of characters).
