Kazakhstan is a transcontinental country located in Central Asia. It is also the world's largest landlocked country.
Kazakhstan is bordered by Russia to the west and north, China to the east, Kyrgyzstan to the southeast, Uzbekistan to the south, and Turkmenistan to the southwest. From the southwest, it is also bounded by the Caspian Sea.
Between 1936 and 1991, Kazakhstan was part of the Soviet Union and known as the Kazakh Soviet Socialist Republic (Kazakh SSR, KazSSR or simply Soviet Kazakhstan).
