Hey, I'm Joey. Luigi said you were reliable so come back later, there might be some work for you. Alright?

Joey Leone is a main character in Grand Theft Auto III and is mentioned in Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas and Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories.

He is voiced by Michael Rapaport.

History[]

Background[]

Joey is the son of Salvatore Leone, don of the Leone Family, the most powerful family in Liberty City. Joey works as a mechanic and owns his own business, Joey's Garage.

Joey Leone was born in Liberty City and was brought up by his father, Salvatore, and his mother, who died at an unknown point in time. Salvatore became don of the Leone Family in the late 1980s. Joey, however, had no ambitions of becoming a prominent gangster in the family, deciding instead to concentrate on small time crime, although he does attend important family meetings along with caporegime Toni Cipriani and Luigi Goterelli.

Sometime after Carl Johnson’s brother is killed, the latter moves to Liberty City and Joey employs him as a car thief after he moves to Liberty City. The two bond over their mutual estrangement from their respective families. This business relationship lasts until late 1992 when Carl moves back to Los Santos following the death of his mother.

Carl later meets Joey’s father, Salvatore in Las Venturas. The latter is pleased that Carl knew Joey and is quick to employ him. However, Carl betrays Salvatore when he robs his casino with the Triads, turning Salvatore into a paranoid wreck. It is unknown if Joey ever learned of Carl’s actions.

By 1998, Salvatore does not appear to be pleased with Joey (his aforementioned paranoia likely contributing to this), claiming that Toni Cipriani, capo of the Leone Family, is more of a son to him. Nevertheless, Joey's business continues to be successful.

Events of Grand Theft Auto III[]

By 2001, Joey continues to run his garage and appears to have a rivalry with the Forelli Crime Family.

Joey first meets Claude when the latter drives Misty to his garage. He first employs Claude with Mike Lips Last Lunch killing Mike Forelli, a prominent member of the rival Forelli Crime Family via car bomb. When Claude successfully performs this task, he is later tasked with killing Lee Chong, a triad who is selling SPANK for the Colombian Cartel.

After Claude successfully steals a Securicar, he introduces him to Toni and tasks him with being his chauffeur. Toni in turn, employs Claude when Joey puts in a good word for him and Claude proves himself to Toni.

Joey then tasks Claude with disposing of the body of a Forelli gang member before finally tasking him with being a getaway driver during a bank heist.

Later when the Triads wage war with Toni, Claude brings Toni, Joey, and Luigi Goterelli to Salvatore’s mansion to discuss the situation. His father greets him, but chides him to find a wife, to which Joey claims he’s “working on it.”

Joey is not seen again after this. After his father attempts to kill Claude via car bomb, the latter flees to Staunton Island with his step-mother Maria Latore and joint Yakuza leader Asuka Kasen. The latter tasks Claude with killing Joey’s father, which Claude carries out. Joey’s fate after Salvatore’s death is unknown.

Trivia[]

  • Joey was scheduled to appear in Grand Theft Auto Advance, giving five missions to Mike, but he was dropped during the development by Crawfish Interactive.
    • In the final version of the game (by Digital Eclipse), a mafia goon using Joey's artwork makes a minor appearance in the mission Down the River given by Asuka Kasen to the protagonist Mike, who needs to kidnap the mafia's members and traffic them to Asia to be sold as slaves.
  • Early concept art from the Rockstar North website label Joey as "Joey Sorvino", which may have been an early name for the Leone Family.
  • In some PS2 versions of Salvatore's Called a Meeting, Joey wears his garage coveralls when meeting Salvatore, while in the PC and mobile version he wears a black Leone suit.
  • Joey Leone (along with Salvatore Leone, Luigi Goterelli, Maria Latore, 8-Ball, and Toni Cipriani, in that order) appears on posters for the film Badfellas in GTA III, which is a reference to the film Goodfellas.
  • Throughout his missions, Joey can be seen working on a BF Injection and after the Portland missions are completed, the vehicle will spawn outside of Misty’s apartment in Hepburn Heights (presumably a gift from Joey).
