Niko receives a phone call from Mallorie Bardas, who informs him that she thinks Roman has been kidnapped and is being held hostage at the Lompoc Avenue Warehouse in Industrial. Niko drives to the factory where Roman is being held.
Niko enters the factory and immediately takes cover behind a wall near the entrance. He fights his way through the factory, killing Dimitri's henchmen along the way, before finding Roman on the top floor. When he arrives, he finds Roman being held in a chokehold by his captor, who is holding a gun to Roman's head. Niko takes the kidnapper out.
Roman thanks Niko for saving him, and the latter follows the former to leave the warehouse. Niko drives Roman back to his apartment in South Bohan. When they arrive at the apartment, Roman admits the extent of his gambling addiction. Niko also explains that the duo need to leave Bohan as quickly as possible before Dimitri comes looking for them.
Mission Objectives[]
In order to complete the mission the player must:
Go to the warehouse where Roman is being held.
Roman is on the top floor. Rescue him.
Use Free Aim to take out the kidnapper and free Roman
Roman sends Niko a text message thanking Niko again for saving him, he also explains that "a biker kidnapped him".
Dimitri sarcastically calls Niko, mentioning how he nearly ran into Roman the other day and how his friends were "hanging out" with him, but adds that the party was "busted" before he could arrive, hinting that he would have caused harm to Roman himself if Niko hadn't saved him.
After a few in-game hours have passed, Roman calls Niko to inform him that he has made enough money to purchase a new penthouse in Middle Park East, Algonquin, serving as a new safehouse for the player.
He likes to party. He stays out late the whole time. You know what he's like.
Mallorie:
Not on my watch he don't. Something ain't right.
Start-of-Mission Phone Call
Some time after this first phone call, Niko gets another phone call from Mallorie.
Mallorie:
Niko, I think Roman has been kidnapped. I heard he owes some Russians money. A friend of mine saw him at that card club on Hunt Point.
Niko:
He owed them money?
Mallorie:
He never tells me anything. I heard they took him to a warehouse off Lompoc in Bohan Industrial.
Niko:
I'll check it out.
A moment later, Niko gets a text message from Dimitri Rascalov. The message includes a photo of Roman tied to a chair, with someone pointing a shotgun at Roman's head. Niko comments about it.
Dimitri:
(text message) Niko - I thought I would send you this picture, looks like your cousin is in a bit of a fix. Your friend, Dimitri.
Niko:
You've crossed the line, Dimitri.
Optionally, Niko can call Dimitri.
Niko:
I got your message Dimitri, you piece of shit. You're a dead man. A dead man. Before you die I'm going to cut your face off. Then I'm going to hang it on my wall to remind me what a lying, cheating, treacherous scumbag looks like. Goodbye, friend.
If Niko approaches using a helicopter, some of the gangsters comment on it. Some will try to take it down using rockets.
Gangster 1:
Shit, what the fuck is this?
Gangster 2:
Is not police.
Niko arrives at the Lompoc Avenue Warehouse, Once inside, an overview cutscene shows numerous Russian gangsters armed and waiting. On the uppermost floor, Roman is seen tied to a chair. A man is speaking to him.
If you want to walk out of here, Slav, you are going to have to think about how you will pay your debt. A friend of mine, Dimitri Rascalov, he would pay a lot of money for your cousin.
Your death could have been so much more painful if you gave us some time.
Accomplice:
We were hoping you would come, Bellic. This party is for you.
Accomplice:
Mr. Rascalov will be very pleased you have come, Bellic.
Accomplice:
We have had to put up with your fat cousin's whining.
Accomplice:
Dimitri was right. You come to collect your fat cousin right away.
Accomplice:
Good thing we did not kill the fat cousin.
Accomplice:
You might not have come if we cut his head off.
Accomplice:
Think you a big hero. This was a trap, asshole.
Accomplice:
It is you who is in danger, Bellic. Not your fat cousin.
Accomplice:
You think we care about stupid gambling debt? We care about killing you.
Accomplice:
Mr. Rascalov will be so happy when he sees your dead body, Bellic.
Once the Accomplice is down, Niko enters the room he was guarding. (Spoken at random)
Niko:
Hang in there, Roman.
Niko:
I'm coming, cousin.
Niko:
You'll be free soon, Roman.
Niko:
You won't need to wait much longer.
Niko:
I'm here for you.
Niko:
Cousin, they will pay for taking you.
Niko:
These people will wish they did not take you, Roman.
Niko:
Your pain is over, cousin. I'm coming.
Niko takes a couple of steps in. Suddenly, the Kidnapper pops up from behind a console, holding Roman in a headlock while pointing a pistol at him. (Spoken at random)
Roman:
Niko, please, help me.
Roman:
I don't want to die, Niko.
Roman:
This is not so good, cousin.
Roman:
Can't we just all be friends?
Roman:
Shit, no. Please, no.
The Kidnapper speaks to Niko.
Kidnapper:
You are Niko Bellic. Turn around and walk away or your cousin is dead. I am not afraid of death. When she comes for me I shall embrace her. I hope that Roman has the same inner peace.
What happened, Roman? You have been gambling. I give you money. How are you in debt?
Roman:
There are cycles, cousin. You must lose a little to win a lot. Come on. My cards were not good.
Niko:
Roman...
Roman:
That man knew Dimitri. He was trying to make me give you up to him. I would never...
Niko:
Of course you would not. Dimitri has taken this too far.
Roman:
He wants you dead. Bohan is not safe. I'm going to get us a place in Algonquin.
Niko:
Are you okay?
Roman:
I'm used to taking these beatings, Niko. I almost expect it now. Wherever I go there are people who want to kill me. Men, who will kidnap me. I'll never marry Mallorie. I won't be able to sleep with another college girl. There is a knife hanging over me. A clock is ticking.
Niko:
Who were those men, what happened? That seemed like a lot of protection to be giving a man who ran up some gambling debts.
Roman:
You're right, at first it was just the debt then they found out my name. They connected me to you and what happened at Hove Beach. Dimitri Rascalov was on his way to that warehouse, they wanted me to give you up. I would never...
Niko:
I know you wouldn't, Roman. I thought we were done with Dimitri when we got out of Hove Beach. Both he and Bulgarin know how to hold a grudge.
Roman:
You know how to hold a grudge as well, Niko. Don't forget about that.
Niko:
I could never forget that, Roman.
Roman:
We have to get out of Bohan, maybe it is time to go to Algonquin. We can disappear in Algonquin.
Niko:
Only for so long. We will be found eventually no matter where we go. Confrontation and/or peace will be our choices at some point. I know the option I am leaning toward.
Roman:
I'd go for anything as long as I could be guaranteed safety, that's all I want. Shit.
South Bohan Safehouse
Niko and Roman arrive at the South Bohan Safehouse.
Roman:
Man, this is out of control.
Niko:
I know.
Roman:
What are we going to do?
Niko:
I don't know.
Roman:
We are going to die. I don't want to die, man. Not like this.
Niko:
How would you like to die?
Roman:
Having a threesome on my hundredth birthday... I don't fucking know! I'm scared, you cold bastard. What are we going to do?
Niko:
I'm not cold.
Roman:
You're cold... all you care about is revenge and getting your own way.
Niko:
And all you care about is money, and gambling it away on the internet. Oh! Isn't America great? I get to sit in front of a computer and play Mr. Rich Man and get into debt with crooks.
Roman:
Okay, I messed up... I know I did. I thought things would be different. I don't understand this place so good. Oh, man. What are we going to do?
Niko:
Stop sitting in front of the computer gambling our money? Stop getting into illegal card games? Stop spending all our money?
Roman:
Yes...
Niko:
Thank you.
Roman:
And stop thinking about the Russians. Man, we just need to disappear as far as they are concerned. Disappear!
Niko:
Okay, okay. But I want Florian and Darko. I need to know what happened. Give me that.
Roman:
Fine. But leave the Russians alone.
Niko:
I was not the one gambling in their private club.
Roman:
I didn't know... give a guy a break.
Niko:
Okay! Okay.
Roman:
Okay. I'm going to clean up. I have a nasty feeling I had a bit of an accident back there. And, Niko...
Some time after completing this mission, Niko gets a text message from Roman.
Roman:
(text message) Hey Cuz, thanks for saving my ass back there. I thought I'd played my last hand when that biker guykidnapped me for the Russians. You're a fucking hero, man. Rom
Some time later, Niko gets a phone call from Roman.
Roman:
Cousin, I have bought us a present.
Niko:
You bought it, or I did?
Roman:
Niko, I'm offended. I've got us an apartment in Algonquin. What did I say when you got here? Penthouse, model on each arm.
Niko:
And you have paid for this place? It wasn't so long ago that your debts got you kidnapped by the Russian mob.
Roman:
That was a cold streak. Now I'm hot, cousin. Hotter than the models we'll be bedding. I can't lose.
Niko:
Roman, we have spoken about your gambling.
Roman:
Wait until you see the new place, NB. You will change your song. So what, I took on a little debt?
If the player calls Dimitri after receiving the picture message of Roman held hostage, Niko will describe how he will cut Dimitri's face off and hang it on his wall to remind himself of what a "lying, cheating, treacherous scumbag" looks like, ending the call with "Goodbye, friend", referring to Dimitri's previous text messages always ending with "your friend, Dimitri."
Niko has unique lines related to Roman's kidnapping, which he shouts when navigating the building and when he is fighting the mobsters during this mission. These include "Take my cousin, will you!?", "I'm leaving here with Roman!", "No one fucks with my family" and "You will not harm my cousin".
If the player tries to land on the roof of the warehouse using a helicopter, two guards standing on the roof will shoot at the player with a Rocket Launcher.
If the player dies whilst leaving the warehouse with Roman, once Niko spawns back at the nearby hospital, his conversation with Roman will carry on as normal.
After Niko gets into the Bobcat outside the warehouse, the in-game Police Scanner can be heard saying there is gunfire at the warehouse and sirens can be heard in the distance, but the player will not receive a Wanted Level (as also happens in Deconstruction for Beginners).
The parked Bobcat cannot be destroyed until Roman enters it.
Shooting at one of the Russians before entering the yellow marker will skip the cutscene that usually plays showing the layout of the warehouse and where Roman is being held captive.
It is not possible to obtain a wanted level during the shootout. If the player evades it before cops arrive, then the officers will shoot at the Russians. The Russians will then fight back and target the police. If the player fires again the lured cops usually won't be alarmed and the wanted level will not be restored (Confirmed on PC).
Despite Mallorie being the boss of the mission, if the first try of the mission was ended in a failure, when Niko got the text message, the retry text will be sent by Roman. It is probably a script glitch.
Mallorie mentions a location called Hunt Point in the call. It is unknown if this was the beta name of Chase Point during development, or a beta location cut from the final. It is more likely that it is Chase Point, as Chase Point is based on Hunts Point in the Bronx (upon which Bohan is based).
If the player fails the mission too many times, Niko will call Mallorie saying "he was too late" to which she will ask "too late for what?" and will start crying. This phone call can also trigger after the player has already restarted the mission.
