It's hard cash or your pink slip in the pot. Con Safos, eh. Then you pull up and race. First past the post wins, con chota, sin chota.
— Cesar Vialpando.

High Stakes, Low Rider is a mission in Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, given to protagonist Carl Johnson by Varrios Los Aztecas gang leader Cesar Vialpando from his home in the El Corona district of Los Santos, San Andreas.

Mission

Carl attains a lowrider car and drops by Cesar's house in El Corona. The two drive to the street race's starting point near the Commerce district and race against four other cars. Carl then traverses through the districts of the western part of Los Santos, before reaching the last checkpoint in Santa Maria Beach. He wins the race and then earns a monetary reward.

Mission objectives

In order to complete the mission the player must:

  • Follow Cesar to the race start.
  • Win the race.

Reward

The reward for this mission is $1,000 and the mission Reuniting the Families is unlocked. The race may be later replayed as part of the Los Santos Race Tournaments, which can be accessed in Little Mexico after the completion of Learning to Fly later in the game. Although completion of these races is mandatory for 100% completion (and for the $1 million award), since Carl has already completed the race here, he does not need to do it again, except to improve his time (which has no bearing on completion of the tournament).

Tips and Tricks

  • It is recommended to use a Tahoma for the mission, because it is very fast and easily driven. The Slamvan is another good choice, as it is one of the fastest lowriders. It is not recommended to use a Savanna because of its wide turning radius.
  • Outfitting Carl's vehicle with nitro at any mod garage will give him an advantage in the race.
  • If the player does not have a lowrider, there are two in the street near Cesar's house. A Voodoo and a Blade can be found.
  • It is not recommended to use the previous vehicle from the previous Ceaser mission "Ceaser Vialpando" as that vehicle is equipped with hydraulics. On the console version, R3 activates the hydraulics and since at this point, the player's driving skills would be low, bouncing the car will cause an instant spin out and crash around corners since the player may hit the hydraulics on accident while turning. This is not present however, on the PC version as the hydraulics key is separate from the regular controls.

Glitch

  • During the opening cutscene, Cesar's car may be black instead of red. This glitch is only present on the PS2 version.

Carl Johnson goes to Cesar's House where he finds Cesar Vialpando and Kendl Johnson sitting in Cesar's Savanna.
Cesar: Heeyy, CJ, you made it!
CJ: What's the bi'ness?
Kendl: Hey Carl!
CJ: Hey, baby.
Cesar: Nice ride, man. That's no carrucha! You sure you want to risk that baby?
CJ: Yeah, I'm sure. How much they talking about?
Cesar: It's hard cash or your pink slip in the pot. Con Safos, eh. Then you pull up and race. First past the post wins, con chota, sin chota.
CJ: OK, for sure. I'm down.
Cesar: Watch out, CJ, these boys don't like to lose, eh...
CJ: Yeah, well me either.
Cesar: Follow me to the race, dude!
CJ follows Cesar and Kendl to race start point near Commerce.
Cesar: Hey, keep up, holmes! Not far now, eh!
Kendl: C'mon, Carl, follow us! You almost there, Carl!

Trivia

  • During the drive to the race, Kendl Johnson's Beta model is used. The reason for this is because Kendl does not usually appear outside of cutscenes and therefore does not have a regular gameplay model.
  • If the player loses the race, Kendl will call Carl and mock him for losing. A video of this can be seen here.
  • Two Majestics participate in the race, even though the Majestic is not a lowrider.
  • At the starting line, the other lowriders are being driven by members of the Varrios Los Aztecas. Once the race begins, however, the gang members are replaced by regular NPCs.
  • In the opening cutscene, the steering wheel in Cesar's vehicle turns when he moves it. This is the only time in the game that this occurs, as all steering wheels remain static in regular gameplay.
  • Cesar's Savanna is Bullet/Fire/Explosion-proof; after winning the race and completing the mission, the player can damage the car once it arrives at the finish line. At this point, Cesar will behave like a normal NPC by exiting the car and fighting CJ back, unlike other instances of the game where storyline characters simply disappear when a mission is completed. The player can scare Cesar away by attacking him with a firearm, and then take the car.
  • Inputting "All cars explode" before get to the starting grid with CJ's race car invicible will blank the screen in the PC version, however if the player checks the brief when they exit and re-enter again, it will say that the player destroyed Cesar's car thus leading to a mission failure.
  • If "Pedestrian Riot" had been activated before, once at the starting grid (do not get into the red corona), pedestrians there will pull the driver (including Cesar or Kendl) of the low-riders out the car, but the driver or Cesar cannot be killed anyway.
