Shit Smoke! C.R.A.S.H. makin' you sell us out?!
Carl Johnson, shocked at Big Smoke's betrayal

The Green Sabre is a mission in Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas given to protagonist Carl Johnson by Grove Street Families leader Sean "Sweet" Johnson from his home in Ganton, Los Santos, San Andreas.

Mission[]

The three feuding families of the Grove Street Families have come together due to Carl's efforts and Sweet decides to finally get back at the Ballas. Sweet also makes good with Carl and calls him his running dog. He then orders everyone to get heated, and meet him under the Mulholland Intersection.

While on the way, Carl is side-tracked by a call from Cesar, who instructs him to meet up under the freeway north of Verdant Bluffs for some important news. At Cesar's urging, the initially hesitant Carl drives to the meeting point where Cesar is waiting is inside a Bravura with tinted windows. There, they witness some Ballas gang members exit a hideout/garage, followed by Ryder and Big Smoke, and finally Officer Frank Tenpenny. Much to CJ's horror, Eddie Pulaski then reverses a car out of the garage, revealing the same green Sabre that was used in the drive-by in Grove Street to kill Carl's mother. Cesar reveals that C.R.A.S.H. ordered the drive-by with the intent of killing Sweet, and have been working with the Ballas, Big Smoke, and Ryder to wipe out the Families and profit off the drug trade.

As Carl thanks Cesar for the exposure, he suddenly realizes that Sweet and the rest of the Grove Street Families are heading into a trap. After ordering Cesar to take Kendl to a safe place, Carl races over to the underside of the Mulholland Intersection to prevent Sweet and the homies from being killed.

Upon arriving, Carl sees a deadly shootout taking place. He also sees that Sweet has taken a hit. Out of loyalty, Carl stays to hold off the Ballas hordes. Numerous Ballas members will come and shoot at Carl and the rest of the gang. Carl holds them off until the police arrive, causing the remaining Ballas and GSF homies to flee. Refusing to leave his injured brother, Carl surrenders to the LSPD.

Both brothers are arrested, with Sweet taken to a prison hospital upstate, and Carl taken to Angel Pine in Whetstone by Tenpenny and Pulaski. Tenpenny explains what happened and what will happen. From now on, Carl will do what he wants him to do. His first task is to eliminate a former cop hiding on Mount Chiliad being guarded by the FBI.

Mission Objectives[]

In order to complete the mission the player must:

  • Get to where Cesar is waiting under the freeway.
  • Get in the car down the alleyway.
  • Get to the ambush before your brother is killed.
  • Hold off the Ballas until the police arrive.

Deaths[]

Reward[]

There is no reward for this mission, but the mission Badlands is unlocked. Following the mission, Carl will be stripped of his weapons except for the Camera, which will temporarily have unlimited capacity for taking photos. The player may now buy any safehouse in the countryside (specifically Red County, Whetstone and Flint County), and save their game at the Angel Pine Save Point. The gang warfare element is temporarily disabled until completing the mission Home Coming. Additionally, the player can now traverse the countryside and enter San Fierro without any police attention, but cannot purchase any safehouses there yet until completing the mission Are You Going to San Fierro?. The player can now travel by train to Cranberry Station and purchase flight tickets to San Fierro at Los Santos International Airport for $500, and vice versa.

Transcript[]

Transcript
Sweet is celebrating in his house with the Grove Street Families for reuniting the whole gang.
Sweet: So this is it, this is when we tell the Ballas what bangin' is all about. Grove Sreet is king! Say it with me ni**as, Grove Street is KING! Yeah!
Gang members: GROVE STREET IS KING!
Carl Johnson arrives and is welcomed by Sweet.
Sweet: Wassup, CJ! Where you been?
CJ: Hey sorry, bro, I got caught up.
Sweet: Yeah, you probably was hittin' one o'them Ballas rats. Yeah I know what you was up to, ni**a!
CJ: (not in the subtitles) You know it!
Sweet: Listen up - y'all down with CJ, right? (Gang members agree) He's been through a lot, I mean we all been through a lot. But CJ's helping us clean up the 'hood. He's taken the fight to the enemy -
CJ: Yeah.
Sweet: showing all of us how we used to bang, what it used to mean to be a Grove Street Family.
Gang members: (not in the subtitles) Yeah.
Sweet: CJ, you're my brother, my running dog. I should have never doubted you.
CJ: It's nothing.
Sweet: But you're home now, partner - home.
CJ: For sure.
Sweet: Listen up! I want y'all to go to get heated. And meet me downtown under the Mulholland Intersection. We're gonna roll on these Balla motherfuckers!
Gang members: A'ight, a'ight!
Sweet: I see y'all in traffic.
Gang members: Yeah, let's roll!
Sweet: (to CJ) You in?
CJ: Hell yeah, I'm in. I'm your running dog, Sweet.
Sweet: Yeah, my ni**a... Alright you go get heated up, and I'll meet you at the crossroads.
CJ leaves Sweet's house and immediately gets a phone call.
CJ: Eh.
Cesar: Hey, CJ, it's Cesar, man.
CJ: I'm kinda busy now, something big going down.
Cesar: Ese, I got to see you, holmes, tell you something.
CJ: Look, if it's about Kendl, don't worry, we cool, a'right?
Cesar: No, CJ, you gotta come and see something. Something important, eh.
CJ: Well, it's gonna have to wait...
Cesar: This can't wait, holmes. If I tell you, you won't believe it, ese, I swear.
CJ: (reluctantly) Ahh, OK, I got about five, so it better be good, where you at?
Cesar: I'm under the freeway northside of Verdant Bluffs.
CJ arrives at Cesar's location and gets in a parked car. Cesar arrives a few moments later.
CJ: So you dragged me way across town to see... what?
Cesar: Just in time, ese, take a good hard look over there.
Some Ballas gang members exit a garage.
CJ: So, some Ballas hanging around a dope spot, so what?
Cesar: Just watch, homie.
Ryder exits the garage.
CJ: (shocked) What the fuck?
Big Smoke also exits the garage.
CJ: Oh, no! Shit, Smoke, what you into?
Cesar: Sshh, ese, look at that ride...
Smoke and Ryder open the garage door, revealing the green Sabre.
CJ: That's the motherfucking green Sabre!
Frank Tenpenny also exits the garage, and Eddie Pulaski reverses the Sabre out of the garage. Tenpenny talks to Smoke.
CJ: Shit, Smoke... C.R.A.S.H. makin' you sell us out! Moms!
Cesar: Sorry ese, I heard a rumor and poked around. I didn't believe it myself but...
CJ: No, no, you did the right thing. I owe you, Ces. I gotta go tell Sweet about - (realizes that Sweet is in danger) Oh, fuck! Sweet! Look, go get Kendl and take her to a safe place!
Cesar: What you thinking?
CJ: It's Sweet, I think him and the homies is walking into a trap! Just go, GO!
CJ goes to save Sweet.
CJ: I gotta warn Sweet!
CJ tries to phone Sweet.
CJ: Dammit, Sweet! Pick up! Pick up!
After the third dialing signal, voicemail was enabled.
Sweet's Voicemail: Eh, wassup? You called me, but I ain't pick it up, so leave the message after the...
CJ: Shit, shit, SHIT!!!
CJ finally arrives to the place, and sees a deadly shootout, as well as Sweet heavily injured.
CJ: Eh, Sweet man, you alright? You been hit!
Sweet: CJ... Where you been?
CJ: Cesar called and showed me some shit. It's Smoke, and he in deep with Tenpenny and some Ballas! He sold us out!
Sweet: It doesn't matter, man - you gotta get out of here. The cops gonna arrive any second.
CJ: Nah man, I ain't runnin' out on my brother! (shouts in anger) Yo, Ballas! I'm taking you motherfuckers, you hear me? I'M TAKING YOU ALL DOWN, BITCHES!
After taking down the Ballas, CJ and Sweet get arrested by the police.
Tenpenny: You got a bag over you head, boy. How you feel about that?
CJ: Man, take it off. Please, man, I can't breathe! Please!
Tenpenny: Oh, alright. But only because you said please. (takes the bag off CJ's head)
CJ: You fucking sick motherfucker!
Tenpenny: Intimidate those who intimidate others, Carl. It's my job. Right Ed?
Pulaski: Hahaha...yeah.
CJ: (notices the place he's at doesn't seem familiar) Hey, man, where we at?
Tenpenny: The middle of fucking nowhere. Nice, clean air.
CJ: Fucking Smoke! Oh, Sweet!
Tenpenny: Sweet is alive. Alive and inside. He's in a prison hospital being treated for gunshot wounds, awaiting trial.
Pulaski: Yeah, somehow, nobody's caught you yet.
Tenpenny: Oh yeah, you should be glad, Carl. Your moron brother's alive. Your street trash, soon to be turned out sister's alive. And, she's only sucking one greaseball's dick. Things are going pretty well for you, Carl. So behave, ni**a.
Pulaski: We want you to do a little favor for us, Carl!
Tenpenny and Pulaski get out of their car, and also drag CJ out of the car.
CJ: I can't believe that ni**a Smoke turned on me.
Pulaski: Smoke? Smoke does exactly what he's told. He learned that lesson a long time ago.
Pulaski shoves CJ into the rear of the car and uncuffs him.
CJ: (not in subtitles) Damn, man, take it easy!
Tenpenny: Yeah, homies for life? Street loyalty? That's all bullshit, Carl. Didn't you learn that when you ran out of town, just 'cause you let Brian die? Huh? Eddie, I can't deal with this guy. He's an idiot!
Pulaski: Let me air this fucker out, I...
Tenpenny: (stops Pulaski from attempting to kill CJ) No no no no no no no, officer... For once, let's let the kid do something with his useless life. He's gonna help us with the fight against crime. Right, Carl?
Pulaski: Yeah. By any means necessary.
Tenpenny: Now you stay the fuck away from Smoke, and stay the fuck away from us. Otherwise Sweet is going to find himself on a Ballas block getting in touch with his feminine side. (to Jimmy Hernandez) Hey Hernandez, you going to piss all day?
Pulaski: (not in the subtitles) Come here.
CJ: (to Pulaski) Get your hands off me, man.
Pulaski: For some reason, we've got a little problem with a former friend of ours, he seems to disagree with some of our methods.
CJ: Now who could do that?
Tenpenny: Yeah, you'll never see anybody as fork-tongued as this snake ass bastard. Soon as he gets caught with his hand in the cookie jar, he'll whistle any tune Internal Affairs wants him to.
Pulaski: See, they've got him hiding up Mount Chiliad someplace, so they can manipulate his testimony any way they want to.
Tenpenny: I want you to pay him a little visit, Carl. And destroy all his evidence before he testifies.
Pulaski: (gives CJ a camera) Sort this out, Carl, so officer Tenpenny can sleep easy at night.
CJ: (not in the subtitles) Man...
Pulaski: We want evidence he ain't gonna talk.

Aftermath[]

  • West Coast Talk Radio reports the following events:
    • Richard Burns narrates a news report on the gang war between the Grove Street Families and the Ballas that happened under the intersection saying many senior Grove Street Families and Ballas gang members were killed, while others were incarcerated.
    • It is also reported that the bridges connecting Red County and Flint County have finally reopened, with many delays, following the earthquake a few months ago. The governor has congratulated himself for the rebuilding of the bridges, even though he didn't help with any of the rebuilding of the bridges and even refused to give aid to rebuild them.
  • There is no restriction on Carl returning to Los Santos, although there is no longer a Grove Street Families presence on Grove Street, and the cash point in front of the Johnson house no longer functions. If Carl is wasted close enough to Los Santos he will respawn at a hospital in Los Santos. It is worth mentioning that when returning to Los Santos, the player should be careful, as the city from this mission on is dominated by the Ballas, who are always hostile to the player, and Vagos, who are passively hostile.
    • It is also not possible to incite gang wars on both the Ballas and the Vagos and any territories claimed prior to this mission will be lost.
  • All other Los Santos-based activities, including dating Denise Robinson, are still available (although Denise will not call Carl, and his progress with her will not be affected from not dating her, as long as Carl is not in Los Santos). The Roboi's Food Mart asset also still functions, if Carl has completed the first courier mission.
  • San Fierro is now accessible to the player without police attention, though safehouses are not available for purchase until completing the mission "Are You Going to San Fierro?"

Trivia[]

Site-logo
This article needs to be cleaned up to meet the standards of the GTA Wiki.

  • No "Mission Passed" message appears and no sound is heard after the mission in the original version of the game. However, the message appears in the mobile and Definitive Edition versions.
  • The song that is playing inside Sweet's house is Fuck wit Dre Day by Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg, a song that also can be heard on Radio Los Santos and was also played previously in the same exact location during the mission Nines and AK's.
  • Despite the bridges between Los Santos and Red County, and San Fierro and Flint County reopening, no vehicles will use them until Yay Ka-Boom-Boom, although there is one bridge located north of the Flint Intersection (just north of the RS Haul) where some vehicles may occasionally be seen driving across. However, only vehicles from the Red County side (especially the ones that spawn between the bridge and a nearby T-Junction north of it) will drive across the bridge to get to Flint County.
  • It seems that Ryder was not due to appear during the part of betrayal. According to the mission's dialogue, Carl only notices Smoke and the C.R.A.S.H. officers taking the Sabre out of the garage, despite Ryder exiting in front of Smoke. Carl does not mention Ryder to Sweet nor do he and Cesar mention him during King in Exile. The first time Ryder's betrayal is discussed, is during Photo Opportunity when Carl utters "Ryder, you sherm-head!" as Ryder arrives in Angel Pine to meet with the Loco Syndicate. Carl then photographs him. Carl only mentions Ryder during Photo Opportunity and briefly talks to him moments before his death, with Ryder showing no regrets.
  • The officers who surround Carl under the Intersection aim their pistols in a sideways manner usually attributed to gang members. This is due to the officers being scripted as opposed to those who appear in regular gameplay.
  • In the original version, Pulaski's mouth does not move when he says "We want you to do a little favor for us Carl". This was fixed in the Definitive Edition.
  • The Camera Pulaski hands to Carl in the final cutscene is a different model to the usual one obtainable in the game.
  • The Bravura that Cesar and Carl use cannot be damaged or moved before the betrayal cutscene. However, it can be driven after the cutscene.
  • Originally, there was a small cutscene that would play between Carl eliminating all of the Ballas and the police arriving. In the cutscene, Carl would tell Sweet that he defended him because "he wasn't gonna lose another brother", and Sweet weakly admits that he was wrong about Carl being a "busta".
  • During the shootout, no police will spawn across the entire State of San Andreas. As a result, no police appear even if the player receives a wanted level. The police will respawn once the shootout has ended, although the police who arrive to arrest CJ and Sweet are scripted.
  • The scene where CJ and Sweet are arrested while the other Grove Street members run is inspired by the 1993 movie Blood In Blood Out. In it, Miklo and Paco, two members of the Chicano street gang Vatos Locos (Crazy Guys) get into a shootout with a rival gang and Miklo is wounded. After a police car chase Paco, Miklo and two other members of the Vatos Locos crash the car and while the other two gang members flee the scene, Miklo and Paco are arrested in a similar way to CJ and Sweet and the camera even pans up to an aerial shot. This scene can be seen here.
    • Another striking similarity is that while Sweet and Miklo were sent to prison, Carl and Paco ended up working for law enforcement.
