Grand Theft Auto 2.5, also referred to as the GTA Miami project, was the codename of a cancelled Grand Theft Auto game developed by DMA Design.[1]

Description[]

The game was being developed by the original DMA Design development team circa 1999. According to former Rockstar North employee Obbe Vermeij, the game was internally called "2.5" because:

  • It was intended to be released after Grand Theft Auto 2.
  • It was played in a top-down isometric 3D perspective (described as similar to SimCity's perspective), which the developers colloquially called the "2.5-dimensional" perspective.

According to Vermeij, this title was originally set in "Miami", presumably returning to Vice City from the original Grand Theft Auto in a different perspective or a complete new reimagined Miami. This project was cancelled when the DMA Design offices in Dundee were closed. Two years later, the series suffered a reboot with the release of Grand Theft Auto III, and the project was presumably forgotten in favor of full 3D graphics and third person perspective.

It was not specified if the game would have one solo protagonist like its predecessor Grand Theft Auto 2, or if it would have multiple male and female protagonists like the original Grand Theft Auto. Apart from the isometric perspective, it is unknown what other features would have been introduced to the 2D Universe in this title.
