This page documents the Official GTA Wiki Policy on oddjob-ing and jobsworth-ing.

Policy

Oddjob-ing refers to the practice of Staff members making infrequent and sporadic contributions with the primary intent of creating an illusion of activity without actively contributing to the wiki's substantive growth. Such practices can misrepresent the actual level of staff engagement and can be used as a means to retain power without actively contributing to the wiki's content and community.

Jobsworthing refers to the act of Staff members not exercising due care when editing articles, rushing through edits, or failing to follow the standards expected on the wiki. This can result in inaccuracies, poorly structured articles, and a negative impact on the wiki's reputation. Like oddjob-ing, such actions can lead to a misrepresentation of staff engagement and set a poor example for readers and the community.

For first-time infractions, Staff members may be informally or formally notified of their irregular activity. The alert will include guidance on how to rectify the issue and adhere to the established standards. Failure to return to regular activity may result in Staff members having their privileges revoked. This includes removal from Staff positions and a return to regular user status. Users on Probation may not pass if inactivity is continued. Discussion surrounding inactivity should follow Demotion protocol and is held at the Community Noticeboard.

Prohibited oddjob/jobsworth-ing activity

Examples of activity that could be considered oddjob-ing or jobsworth-ing:

  • Sporadic minor edits: Making minor and infrequent edits, such as adding or removing links, fixing capitalization, or copy-pasting content across articles without significantly improving the overall quality or accuracy of the content.
  • Burst editing: Engaging in a sudden burst of edits concentrated on a single day or short period, followed by prolonged inactivity for longer periods of time without continued engagement.
  • File updates: Uploading or updating files with no substantial relevance to ongoing article improvements, with sporadic or minimal involvement in other aspects of the wiki.
  • Discussion-centric contributions: Focusing solely on participating in discussions (including Discord), forums, or talk pages, without actively contributing meaningful content to articles.

Permissible oddjob/jobsworth-ing activity

So long as normal activity is resumed within reasonable time, alerting users of potential inactivity is not considered oddjob-ing.

  • Semi-active alerts: Editing one's user page to alert users of potential future inactivity or semi-activity: Making updates to one's user page to inform the community of potential periods of inactivity or reduced activity, ensuring transparency and effective communication.
  • Semi-active discussions: Engaging in discussions on user talk pages, specifically pertaining to reasons for inactivity or semi-activity, as this promotes open communication and understanding within the community.

Advisory

It is essential to strike a balance between participating meaningfully in article contributions and addressing real-life commitments or temporary inactivity. While the permissible odd-job-ing actions facilitate transparency, they should not overshadow the primary responsibility of actively contributing to the wiki's growth and maintaining its high standards. Staff members are encouraged to prioritize consistent, valuable contributions to the wiki's content while remaining open about their availability and potential periods of reduced activity.
