GTA2 Demo v8.9 (also known as GTA2 Demo Level[1] and GTA2 Preview[2]) is a free demo for Grand Theft Auto 2. As its name suggests, it serves as a preview for the first chapter of the game, Area 1: Downtown, entirely set in the Downtown District of Anywhere City, and all missions are given to Claude Speed by the bosses of the Yakuza, the Zaibatsu and the Loonies (Johnny Zoo, Trey Welsh and Elmo, respectively) via payphones found in their respective gang turfs.
Being a limited timed demo, several features are absent, such as the ability to save the player's progress.
Availability[]
The free demo was made available by DMA Design and Rockstar Games on the official GTA 2 website in September 1999 for PC players on Windows, compatible from Windows 95 to Windows 7. The demo is currently abandonware and can be obtained from Internet Archive.

Each gang has it's own particular interests, aims, and above all, hatreds. These are too complex to go into in any detail here. Suffice to say, the easiest way to get respect from these psychos is to kill their worst enemies. None of the missions in the demo require you to have earned much respect, as they are all missions designed to test your loyalty and competency. However, if a gang particularly dislikes, you'll find visiting their part of town a reasonably hair raising experience.
To earn the respect of the Loonies, cause some mahem in the Yakuza part of town.
To earn the respect of the Zaibatsu go and abuse some Loonies.
To earn the respect of The Yakuza teach the Zaibatsu Corporation some really dirty business practices.”
Description[]
The player spawns in the Loonies' contact area in Fruitbat, being warned by the Guider that they have only six minutes to live until the explosives inside their stomach blow up, ending the demo time limit.
The compass with three colored arrows around the player indicates the starting point of each gang mission. Each arrow color represents a different gang in the Downtown District. Note that the arrow colors are the same as the "respect-o-meter" bars for each gang shown in the top left corner of the HUD.

Notable Differences from Official Release[]
Sound Files[]
The demo sound bank file is built on top of the Industrial District sound bank file. As a result, the police dispatch will refer to Industrial District neighborhoods when reporting a player crime in the Downtown District.
The sound bank file also includes early versions of the ambience audio loops for the Industrial District.[note 1]
