The Freight[1] is a flatcar in Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas.

Design[]

The Freight is actually a stripped down chassis/carbody of the locomotive, thus sharing the triple-axle bogies, the brake cylinders on the sides and the large defenses with couplers on both ends, as well as access steps on either side and guard rails with circular lights on the ends. Two to four cars can spawn on the same train.

Performance[]

Like the Brown Streak and the Freight, the train car is immune to all forms of damage, including weapon damage, fire, and any physical obstruction; however, derailments will render it useless. Due to the lack of obstructions on the train car, the player can place full-sized vehicles on them (should the player manages a way to get in an area elevated enough to reach the same train car), though the vehicle may slide off when the train is in motion.

Technically being a vehicle, the train car has its own handling line, which is identical to the locomotives.

Prominent Appearances in Gameplay[]

  • In the Beginning – A Freight train with several flatcars appears in the opening cutscene, forcing Pulaski to wait for it to pass.
  • CatalystCarl must steal weaponry from a Freight train, with the flatcar carrying several crates. If the mission is failed before the train leaves, the weapons on the flatcar will disappear.
  • Snail Trail – Freights with their flatcars appear as dangerous obstacles heading towards the player as they are following a Brown Streak train to Los Santos. They must be avoided or the player will lose the train and fail the mission.
  • Green Goo – Carl required to steal green goo from a Military Freight train. The train itself is much larger than normal trains, and carry large amounts of weapons crates, along with a Rhino.

Trivia[]

  • The Freight featured in Green Goo has five flatcars attached to it. This is one of the three times a five car Freight is seen, the others being the opening cutscene and during Snail Trail, though the five flatcars variant does not always appear during this mission. Then, it sometimes comes with only one flatcar during the missions Catalyst and Snail Trail too. All other times, it has the minimum of two and the maximum of four. Also, it comes with two locomotives in the front and the back, each with three flatcars between them in the mission Snail Trail.
  • If the train car happens to end up in water, it will stay afloat indefinitely. The player can climb atop the unsinkable train car as if it were a stationary platform. The same applies to the locomotives and the Brown Streak coach.
  • The vehicle can be locked on with a Heat-Seeking Rocket Launcher or a Hydra, but it will not affect the train car. When the health of a car is drained to zero after firing a certain number of rockets, it cannot be locked on anymore.
  • Saving a derailed Freight in a garage will crash the game when the door is reopened. The same applies to the locomotives and the Brown Streak coach.
