For the mission in Grand Theft Auto V, see Fire Truck (mission).
The Fire Truck is a firefighting apparatus appearing in Grand Theft Auto IV, Episodes from Liberty City, Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars, Grand Theft Auto V and Grand Theft Auto Online.
The Fire Truck has appeared in every game throughout the Grand Theft Auto series, previously appearing in the 2D Universe and 3D Universe. It is the only vehicle in the entire series to appear in every GTA game.
Design[]
Grand Theft Auto IV[]
The MTL "24v Supercharged" Fire Truck serves as the Liberty City Fire Department's standard firefighting apparatus. The overall design of the truck is heavily reminiscent of the 1989-2001 Seagrave Commander II chassis, featuring the flat-roof design and split cab front and side windows. The front of the Fire Truck has influences from the 1990-2000 Pierce Dash, particularly in the grille and headlight arrangement. While the truck's livery does not resemble the real-life FDNY's livery used for the past 20 years, the livery does resemble the one used on the fleet during the early 90s.
The Fire Truck employs a more detailed design with similarities to the GTA San Andreas iteration, albeit with a more realistic four-door layout. The front bumper of the truck features a set of front-facing fog lights and side-facing amber lights, as well as a vented section on the driver side intended for the electronic sirens and an air horn with a warning sticker on the passenger side. The upper surface of the same bumper features an exposed compartment in the center and two hook points beside it, followed by bumper guides on the edges. On the frontal fascia, the truck features a tall and narrow grill bearing the MTL logo in the center, and is flanked by square vents on the lower portion, silver panels with dual square headlights on the middle portion, and sectioned panels with smaller vents, arrow-shaped turning lights and unusable red/blue emergency lights on the upper portion. Above the frontal wall is the split windshield with a slightly angled shape and silver trim, the wipers mounted below and various marker lights on top.
On the sides, the truck's cab uses tall doors with silver handles and grab bars beside them for access, in conjunction with tall mesh vents and single marker lights near the front grab bars. The roof area mounts an extra lamp on the front right quarter and a ventilation unit in the middle, along with four red lights on the quarters and a single white light between the frontal red lights. The middle section features exposed inlets/outlets on either side and a tall pole with three extra lamps, as well as the pump panel on the passenger side, with various gauges and levers around. The rear section uses several storage compartments on either side and steel panels with the MTL badge over the rear wheel arches, together with the hard-suction pipe on the left, a ladder on the right and four hose compartments, with three of them partially open. Two additional white emergency lights can be seen on top, on the rearmost corners, as well as an extra lamp on the driver side.
The rear end of the truck features grab bars on the upper halves of the side walls and inlets/outlets on the lower half that are similar to the ones on the pump panel, while the hook points and silver badging can be seen on the lower half. The outer edges of the truck house small tail lights, consisting of the red main units, amber arrow-shaped indicators, red brake units and white reverse units. The bottom of the truck is occupied by an extended sted with angled corners and supports. The interior of the truck features rear-facing seats in the middle row (not usable by any occupant) and a long overhead console where all the components are operated (much like in a real-fire truck).
The truck assumes a color pattern similar to the Grand Theft Auto: Vice City rendition (red primary and white secondary), but with red-colored industrial rims. Every fire truck is numbered 69 and is equipped with a high powered deck-mounted water cannon on top of the pump area behind the cabin.
Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars[]
The design of the Fire Truck remains similar to its appearance in GTA IV, assuming an identical but lower resolution livery, consisting of a red body and white stripes. The lights on the roof are recolored to orange, but still flash white and red, and the rear mounted flashers have been removed. There does not appear to be any equipment inside the rear bed unlike its GTA IV iteration, and other details such as the pump panel have been removed. The fire truck also has a unique siren not found on other emergency vehicles. Like previous installments, the roof-mounted pumper can be operated.
Grand Theft Auto V and Online[]
The Grand Theft Auto V and Online rendition is not much different from the previous game; however, the livery appears to be a combination of livery designs used on Los Angeles Fire Department and Los Angeles County Fire Department fire engines.
The Fire Truck, being operated by the Los Santos Fire Department, still assumes the design of the Grand Theft Auto IV rendition, but there are small tweaks to the model itself. The front bumper and rear end mount a license plate and the red/blue emergency lights on the front are functional. The cabin makes use of an orange/amber LED lightbar on the roof, as well as side flashing lights of the same color, beside the middle and rear windows. The extra lamp on the front right quarter of the roof is not present. The rear step allows two occupants to hang on in a similar manner to the Trashmaster, while the rear-facing seats of the cab's interior can be entered when the available seats are occupied (only possible in Grand Theft Auto Online, as there is no enter/exit animation for them). The color pattern has been changed as well, being a predominant red color with white and yellow stripes at the bottom and identification markings, such as "Class 1", "32" and "36", though lacking the red color on the rims.
In the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 versions of the game, the siren is shared with all other emergency vehicles in the game, while in the enhanced versions of the game, the Fire Truck features a unique siren set with a slightly deeper pitch wail and yelp. It also receives additional horn variations of varying pitch. The horn choice is randomized when the vehicle is spawned.
Performance[]
Grand Theft Auto IV[]
Vehicle[]
The Fire Truck performs very well for a truck of its size. It has moderate acceleration, considering its weight and design. Its top speed may take a while to reach, but once there, the truck cannot be stopped easily by other road users; the truck is a rolling battering ram. Its durability is one of the best in the game due to its weight and body style, and it isn't too effected by moderate explosions either.
Unfortunately, due to this sheer weight, its braking is left to be desired; despite the set-off sound of released pressure revealing the brakes are air brakes (which are better performance-wise), the brakes will squeak when braking from high speeds, which sounds to be more similar to hydraulic braking. Either way, the brakes do not compete well with the high speeds the truck can reach.
The vehicle itself performs very well off-road, thanks to its ground clearance, and its AWD layout allows it to climb uphill without having the vehicle become underpowered; this system also allows it to make turns more easily. However, rollovers are likely an issue, as turning too fast will simply roll it over onto its side due to the relatively soft suspension, most notably when an obstacle is present or due to the terrain's inclination.
The Firetruck is stated to be powered by a Supercharged 24-Valved (erroneously stated as a V24) engine, coupled to a 5-speed gearbox in a front-engine, all-wheel-drive layout. It shares the engine sound with the Trashmaster, the Packer and the Ripley.
Weapons[]
The water cannon is once again functional, and is apparently seen as a deadly weapon by the LCPD, as using it against police and civilians is one of the fastest non-lethal ways to gain a six-star wanted level without killing anyone. The water cannon can also easily push any vehicle except ones too heavy. The driver cannot make use of weapons while driving the vehicle, as the water cannon assumes the same controls.
Grand Theft Auto V and Online[]
Vehicle[]
The Fire truck has had a major overhaul in performance, performing better in many areas. The truck has a better acceleration rate, due to what sounds to be a more powerful, higher revving engine, and a low-geared setup. The truck's handling is more responsive, and can turn much more easily, and the brakes are more effective than the last appearance. Unfortunately, the truck seems lighter, meaning it does not ram vehicles out of the way as easily as it did in GTA IV. Though on the plus side, it is more controllable in terms of acceleration and handling, mostly because of the simplistic drivetrain.
Again, the Firetruck is stated to be powered by a Supercharged 24-Valved engine, this time coupled to a 5-speed gearbox in a front-engine, rear-wheel-drive layout.
Weapons[]
Again, the player can use the Firetruck's water cannon. If the police see the player "attacking" cars or people with the water cannon, a one-star wanted level is given, and if the player hits the police cars with the hose, two wanted stars are given. Civilians hit by the water cannon may also turn hostile and attack the player. Because of the game's physics, the water cannon may be much deadlier than in GTA IV, as the character will constantly get hurt in the process. It can also be used to clean away fuel.
Although the player still cannot make use of weapons while driving the vehicle, the action button that normally changes weapons now gives the water cannon a unique tracking functionality; by holding it, the water cannon tracks nearby vehicles (occupied or not) within a small radius (more or less 15m) without having to move the camera. This seems to work in a 90-degree coverage, relative to the vehicle's front (meaning any vehicle past 45 degrees from either side will simply be ignored).

Grand Theft Auto V and Online[]
Oversights[]
Grand Theft Auto V and Online[]
- NPCs can still hang on to the rear of the Fire Truck even when the rear step is detached, due to it being considered the vehicle's rear bumper. This causes the NPCs to appear as if they were floating.

Trivia[]
- The "69" on the Firetruck's side is a pun to the sexual position "69".
Grand Theft Auto V and Online[]
- There is an FDLC placard behind the front doors with a memorial ribbon. This could be a reference to the HD Universe's equivalent of the 9/11 attacks.
- Hitting an occupied Firetruck with an unarmed melee attack, including while riding a motorcycle in Grand Theft Auto Online, will cause the firemen onboard to go aggro on the player. Before dismounting to fight, the driver will attack with the water cannon while the passengers proceed to curse at and flip the player off.
- If a Fire Truck is commandeered by law enforcement or military personnel, the water cannon will be used by the driver in an attempt to stop the player.
- Sometimes, spraying pedestrians or their vehicles with the onboard water cannon will cause them to go aggro towards and chase the player. Continually doing this will result in a wanted level as will spraying law enforcement or military pedestrians/vehicles directly.
- Passive Mode in GTA Online is disabled when entering the truck, as the water cannon is considered a weapon. This is also the case with the RCV.
