This article lists Beta Releases in Grand Theft Auto Online. Content that was originally cut may also be listed here.
"GTA V Multiplayer" and "Clan Territory War"[]
Main article: Multiplayer in GTA V
According to some early development screenshots from Steven Walsh's website [1], Grand Theft Auto Online was originally meant to be a multiplayer mode similar to Grand Theft Auto IV Multiplayer, and was unlikely to be treated as a separate game like GTA Online.
The only known game mode was some sort of "Territory War" between gangs of Los Santos and the LSPD. Players would have to choose a gang member/cop model, each with a defined name, similar to the multiplayer characters in Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories and Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Stories.
One of the main differences between GTA Online and GTA V Multiplayer was the lack of the Character Creator. The players couldn't create their own characters like in GTA Online. Instead, they would have to choose to play as a gang member or a cop (referred to as "Clans" in the old menu screenshots), in a similar way as the multiplayer characters in Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories and Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Stories.

Cut Vehicles[]
- A special ramp-door Mule, internally named
mule2
, was originally unused. It features a unique ramp-door replacing the standard doors on the back. It was eventually used in one particular Resupply mission as part of the Gunrunning update, exclusively for the enhanced version, but is otherwise unobtainable.
- Audio files suggest the Tug was meant to be added in the Heists update, as various engine sounds are found in audio clips. This would support one of the heists cut from the final release, which involved raiding the Port of LS for drugs, where players enter by both sea and air. This was soon added in the Executives and Other Criminals update for the enhanced version only.
- Arena War variants of the Cognoscenti, Peyote, Tempesta and Vamos were cut from the game.
Missions[]
- Lines of Coke was a mission cut from GTA Online. It would have been available for 1 to 4 players, and is overall very similar to The Los Santos Connection. The player(s) must go to a drug deal taking place in a parking garage in Little Seoul, and would go to check the GPS of a Boxville, guarded by enemies, to get a location of the enemy.
Heists Update[]
- Prison Break - Riot Vans was a heist setup cut from GTA Online. It was originally planned to be one of the setups for the Prison Break setup as part of the Heists update, but went unused. Only audio from the mission remains. The audio files are of the heist leader, a different character, who was eventually replaced by Agent 14, who went on to instruct the entire heist.[8]
- Multiple other audio bank files suggest beta heists/heist setups were in development but cut from the final update:[9]
- 2 setup missions were cut from the Pacific Standard heist:
- A setup mission involved locating and capturing a character named Melvin Andrews. These clips suggest the player had to track him down by avoiding "phantom signals" and following the correct one Lester gives them. [10]. His role in the heist suggests he was replaced by Avi Schwartzman, who uses the same voice as Melvin.
- Another setup mission involved tracking down a bank manager, under the name of Joseph Whites, aka "Casanova", and tailing him back to his apartment. Here, the players steal his bank pass/card in order to clone it, which will allow them to gain access to the vault in the final heist. To distract Joseph, the players seduce him, performing sex acts, such as "spooning". It is likely his role in the heist was deemed unnecessary, but also sexually inappropriate, and as such the final heist involves simply hacking into the vault.[11]
- Other parts of the audio files include Lester hosting another heist/heist setup which involves stealing a chopper from the LS Naval Port.[12]
- A huge number of audio files suggest major changes were made to the Fleeca Job, wherein the final heist consisted of raiding 3 banks.[13] [14] Interior models of the smaller, inaccessible, franchises of Fleeca banks exist in the files. These audio files show that the Fleeca branch on Vespucci Boulevard was one of the three banks to be hit.
- One of two setup missions are also referenced in audio files, including one involving stealing Seasharks and dropping them off in the LS River.
- Another setup mission involves planting explosives on substations around the city, ready to be triggered during the final heist, in order to bring power down during the bank robberies.
- Another set of audio clips suggest another heist was scrapped before the release, this time involving stealing drug shipments in the Port of Los Santos using the Cargobob[15], multiple missions involving ambushing moving targets using a sniper team and other vehicles[16][17], and raiding the Clucking Bell Farms chicken factory and loading drug shipments onto trucks.[18] These audio instructions are hosted by an unknown character, the same character voicing the beta Prison Break - Riot Vans mission. Static files found in the heist DLC folder contain areas where heists take place. The inclusion of Elysian Island in these files suggest this was one of the possible areas of the port to be hit during this heist.[19]
- 2 setup missions were cut from the Pacific Standard heist:
Los Santos Summer Special[]
- Unused audio files indicate that originally, Brendan Darcy would call the player with a reminder to buy a Galaxy Super Yacht if they did not own one[20]. In the official release, an e-mail is sent to the player instead.
- Five additional bed modifications for the Yosemite Rancher are unused.[21]
- An unused roof scoop modification for the Club can be found in the game files.[22]
- The Peyote Custom has unused "Painted Front Bumper" and "Painted Rear Bumper" customization options.[23]
- A few vehicles were cut, such as:
police6
,policegreenwood
,policeb2
,polriata
,polcaracara
,polgranger
,polpanto
,polbati
andzoku
.[24]- A possible variant of the Police Transporter (
policet2
), and Police Cruiser (polbuffalo
) are found in name only in the game files.[25][26][27] - A variant of the Sea Sparrow (
seasparrow2
) was also cut from the game, yet later added as the Sparrow in The Cayo Perico Heist update. - A variant of the Surfer (
surfer3
) was also cut from the game, yet later added as the Surfer Custom in the Los Santos Drug Wars update. - A variant of the Police Cruiser (
police5
) and a police variant of the Gauntlet (polgauntlet
) were also cut from the game, yet later added respectively as the Stanier LE Cruiser and the Gauntlet Interceptor in The Chop Shop update.
- A possible variant of the Police Transporter (
- An audio bank for a possible variant of the Cargobob
cargobob5
can be found in the game files.[28] - A trade price for a possible variant of the Wolfsbane can be found in the game files.[29]
- Originally, this update was going to re-introduce the Cops 'n Crooks game mode first featured in Grand Theft Auto IV's multiplayer. According to a Bloomberg article from July 2022 [30], Rockstar had scrapped the game mode due to the coincidental timing of George Floyd's death and subsequent police protests across the United States. Leftovers from the game mode can still be found in the update files.[31]
The Cayo Perico Heist[]
- A fourth Keinemusik mission was originally going to appear. The player would be instructed to get tequila from the The Diamond Casino & Resort and deliver it to Cayo Perico[32], similar to Palms Trax's Recover the delivery truck mission.
- Originally, the player had to physically pick up suppressors up from the Ammu-Nation in Cypress Flats after buying them for the The Cayo Perico Heist[33], similar to Heist Prep: Masks for The Diamond Casino Heist.
- Unused voice lines from Pavel indicate that the Kosatka may have been able to be used to scope out Cayo Perico. Dialogue indicated that since the protagonist has no disguise, they'll only have one shot with this approach, getting caught likely means they'll get kicked off the island and wake up back at Los Santos[34].
The Contract[]
Two variants of Security Contract: Asset Protection missions were cut. One called Air Freight, where the player would have to protect cargo at the LSIA, and the other one was called Showroom, where the player would have to protect vehicles at Premium Deluxe Motorsport, with Simeon Yetarian himself with bodyguards appearing as allies. Unused dialogue texts can still be found in the game's files:
Soundtrack[]
- The track "Universal" by Tangerine Dream was cut from the final game. It remains in the files.[35]
- It later returned (remixed) in the Freemode Events Update, under the name "fm_univ" in the game files.[36]
- The track "Greyhound" by Tangerine Dream was cut from the final game.[37] Only the first stem is used in the first Flight School lesson, "Outside Loop".
- A heist track was cut from the Heists update. It is named "TRACK_22" in the files, but uses all the strings from track 2.[38]
