Cam Jones: “Well, the best shooter in this town is a guy named Cassidy.”
Tommy Vercetti: “Is that so?”
Cam Jones: “Yeah. A military guy, or he thinks he is. I doubt he was ever in the army, but he certainly knows how to get a hold of guns. He'll be down at the shooting range.”
Cam Jones recommends a guy named Phil Cassidy for the bank job.

The Shootist is a Malibu Club asset mission in Grand Theft Auto: Vice City which the protagonist Tommy Vercetti does independently, located in Vice Point, Vice City.

Description[]

Tommy wants a stickup man for the job. Cam Jones recommends Phil Cassidy as he considers him to be one of the best shooters in town. Tommy heads to Downtown to a shooting range to meet Phil. Phil challenges Tommy to a shooting contest, and will only assist him if he wins.

Walkthrough[]

The objective of this mission is to get a total score above 60 within three rounds of a shooting range.

In the first round, there will be three targets hanging from the ceiling and moving from left to right. The closest target is worth one point, the middle is two points, and the farthest is worth three points. The time limit is set to two minutes, but there is no need to rush, as this will use up Tommy's ammo. It is convenient for Tommy to aim for the middle and farthest target rather than the closest one, as they will be able to get more points. In order to make it easier to hit the farthest targets, shoot all parts of the closest dummy except for the head. This will make it easier to hit the farther targets since the closest dummy is not blocking the two. By following these steps, Tommy can gain around 40 points if done correctly.

In the second and third rounds, the targets of people will appear from windows, doorways and in front of Tommy. All targets are worth one point each. Tommy has a one minute time limit, but again, there is no need to rush this round, as this will also take up ammo. Make sure that Tommy does not waste his ammo, and make sure to take time because one minute is enough time for Tommy to win. By following these steps, Tommy could obtain well over 60 points by the end of the second round, allowing for an easy win.

Mission Objectives[]

In order to complete the mission the player must:

  • Go to Ammu-Nation in Downtown and talk to Phil Cassidy.
  • Hit as many targets as you can in the time limit.
  • Move on to the next area.
  • Hit as many targets as you can in the time limit.

Tommy Vercetti goes upstairs to the office of the Malibu Club to see Ken Rosenberg, who's snorting cocaine once again, and Cam Jones.
Tommy: We need a stick up man, you know one?
Ken: Hey, Tommy, Tommy, Tommy, this stuff keeps you sharp, man. Whoo! I could be your stick up man! Stick 'em up, stick 'em up!
Tommy: You ain't a stick up man, you're an idiot. Now get yourself a drink and shut up.
Ken: Hey, get outta my way!
Cam puts his feet down to let Ken pass and get himself a drink.
Ken: Yeh yeh yeh - ow ow ow!
Cam: Relax...
Tommy: Cam, what do you think?
Cam: Well, the best shooter in this town is a guy named Cassidy.
Tommy: Is that so?
Cam: Yeah, a military guy, or he thinks he is. I doubt he was ever in the army, but he certainly knows how to get a hold of guns. He'll be down at the shooting range.
Tommy leaves the Malibu Club and goes to the Ammu-Nation gun store in Downtown Vice City to see Phil Cassidy. He enters the shooting range and comes across Phil, who's dual wielding two Pistols.
Tommy: You Phil Cassidy?
Phil: Why?
Tommy: I'm looking for a man who can handle a gun. From this setup, I'm not too convinced.
Phil: Son, I could shoot a fly off your head at 80 feet.
Tommy: Oh, really?
Phil: Yeah, I learnt in the army.
Tommy: Fly shooting real popular in the army? Glad I don't pay tax!
Phil: You trying to be funny, kid?
Tommy shrugs. Phil laughs and gives Tommy one of his pistols.
Phil: Let's shoot!
Tommy prepares to shoot the targets during the first round of the shooting range.

Tommy shoots the targets until the time runs out or he runs out of ammo.

Trivia[]

  • The song that can be heard playing in the background during the opening cutscene is "99 Luftballons" by Nena. The song is also featured on the in-game radio station Wave 103, but never plays inside the Malibu Club during normal gameplay.
  • The song that can be heard playing in the background during the shooting range cutscene is "Atomic" by Blondie. The song is also featured on Wave 103.
  • Even though Tommy and Phil carry standard pistols during the mission, they are instead seen wielding Desert Eagles in the shooting range cutscene.
  • The mission's title is likely a reference to the 1976 John Wayne film of the same name.
  • Several of the targets are artwork of characters from Grand Theft Auto III.
