Flora is all the plant life present in a particular region or time, generally the naturally occurring (indigenous) native plants. The corresponding term for animal life is fauna.

In the Grand Theft Auto series[]

Trees[]

Trees are plants with a large stem or "trunk" that supports large limbs called branches that in turn have leaves. Trees have appeared in every Grand Theft Auto series since the first Grand Theft Auto game. Trees are indestructible to the player and can not be destroyed nor damaged, except some roadside trees in Grand Theft Auto: Vice City and a few small trees in the countryside in Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas. In some Grand Theft Auto games such as GTA San Andreas, trees grow naturally in the wilderness.

In the first Grand Theft Auto titles, certain items and weapons can be found camouflaged under trees. In certain areas, trees are placed between buildings to prevent the player from taking shortcuts. Each city in the original Grand Theft Auto features a different type of vegetation, while in Grand Theft Auto 2, most of the trees appear to be dead due to the intense pollution of Anywhere City.

There are many different species of trees in the Grand Theft Auto games, ranging from the towering redwoods in Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas to the stalky, leafy maple trees found predominantly throughout Grand Theft Auto IV and tropical trees found in the Caribbean in Grand Theft Auto Online.

In Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy - The Definitive Edition, many bushes and trees are "semi-cartoonish" versions of the vegetation assets of the countryside areas of Southern San Andreas and Cayo Perico in Grand Theft Auto Online and forested areas in Red Dead Redemption 2, most noticeably in Grand Theft Auto: Vice City - The Definitive Edition and Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas - The Definitive Edition.

Trees have the property to be unbreakable and nondestructive, compared with other elements in-game like certain signs or poles, they're considered solid objects and can't be modified or damaged in any way.

In Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, a specific type of grass grows over time after the player gets close at different times. The grass size returns to normal after the player reloads the save file. This type of grass can be found down the hill of the radio tower in Richman, a hill in Mulholland, Los Santos, around Fern Ridge and the Blueberry Trailer Park. [vague]

In Grand Theft Auto V and Grand Theft Auto Online, if the player gets inside a large bush, the player enters stealth mode (player’s blip turns grey in the radar), and this can be used to hide from police. Running over bushes while driving a land vehicle will also slow down the player’s vehicle. Both of these features are not present in any previous game.

Vegetation found in Cayo Perico, Colombia, that appears in Grand Theft Auto Online. Most of the island’s flora are reused assets from Guarma, another Caribbean island that appears in Red Dead Redemption 2.

Glitches[]

  • In the original PlayStation 2 release of Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, a glitch with the draw distance causes the tall redwood trees to pop up too late, causing players to accidentally crash planes into them. This glitch was fixed in the PC and Xbox versions.
