The name most likely comes from Lord Dundreary, a character from the 1858 British play "Our American Cousin", which was the play President Abraham Lincoln was watching when he was assassinated, and as such, the name may be a reference to Lincoln Motors. The name could also refer to the Scottish city of Dundee, where Rockstar North (as DMA Design) was founded.
Although apparently based on Mercury, Dundreary cars are mainly based on other vehicles which share platforms with Lincoln vehicles, with the exception of the Regina. These vehicles generally shares the characteristic long wheelbase and/or heavy bodywork.
