A deuteragonist is the second-main character of a story, after the protagonist. The deuteragonist is normally the secondary protagonist of the story.

The deuteragonists of the 3D Universe have a lot in common. They normally start out not getting along well with the protagonist, for example Sweet who blames Carl for their brother and mother's death. They normally come around though seeing they have really redeemed themselves or that both of them have same goals. Most of deuteragonists also accompany the protagonist in the final mission (Ken, Sweet, Salvatore, etc.).

The deuteragonists of the HD Universe have known the protagonist for a long time and have worked with them before. They are normally introduced in the beginning as a close friend or relative to the protagonist.

Salvatore eventually decides to induct Toni into the Leone crime family as a made man, and uses him in his war against the Forelli and Sindacco families. Salvatore is later sent to prison and doesn't know whether it is the Forelli's or the Sindacco's who are to blame. Salvatore gives orders to Toni from his prison cell, and eventually discovers that the Sicilian Mafia have been playing the mob families and several of the city's smaller gangs against one another in the hope of taking over the city. File:RomanBellic-GTAIV.jpg
Roman Bellic
Roman Bellic is the deuteragonist and a friend of Grand Theft Auto IV. He is Niko's cousin, and convinces Niko to travel to Liberty City when he tells him that he owns huge mansions with lots of women. However, these all turn out to be lies; Roman is constantly in debt to loan sharks. After Niko sorts out his loan sharks, the two are forced out of town. This causes a rift in their friendship, though they do continue to remain friends. Near the end of the game, Roman marries Mallorie Bardas, however there are two outcomes to the game: in the Revenge storyline, Niko's girlfriend is killed at Roman's wedding; in the Deal storyline, Roman is killed at his wedding. It is unknown which ending is canon. It is more likely that Revenge is, because Jay Norris founds Lifeinvader in 2009, and by going from Jimmy De Santa's computer, you can find from looking near Niko Bellic's name that Roman Bellic is still alive, while Kate McReary is more likely not. This is more likely an oversight.

Dave's superior in the FIB, Steve Haines starts looking through Dave's case files and uncovers incriminating evidence which he uses to force Dave to reach out to Michael, Trevor and Michael's new partner Franklin and recruit them for several missions, ceasing contact with all three after the ending of the game.
