Cheats in Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas are similar to those of its predecessors, requiring input of a series of controller button commands or a keyboard. When a cheat code is successfully entered, a "Cheat Activated" message will appear on the upper left corner of the screen to confirm the cheat has been entered. The following cheat codes must be entered during gameplay. Entering cheat codes on the pause menu will not activate the cheat, unlike in earlier games.

Note that the PlayStation 2 and Xbox require the use of the D-pad for directional input. For the PlayStation 3 port of the game, the triggers that need to be pressed must be pressed in the opposite way. For example, where one would normally press / in a cheat, they must press /.

The pedestrian hate and riot cheats are permanent and cannot be reversed if the game is saved while the cheat is active. These pedestrian-related cheats can hinder progress during missions.

On PC, due to the nature of the cheats requiring a hash code rather than just simply the input itself, it may result in hash collisions, thereby making the cheats enterable using a number of combinations, even by simply pressing the movement keys (WASD). The * denotes the intended cheat code found on the Android port of the game – other alternative cheat code combinations (such as HESOYAM and AEZAKMI) – were simply found by using a dictionary and were later widely accepted as the prime cheat code (as cheat codes were not explicitly given by Rockstar Games themselves in any guide, nor did the game executable contain them).

On the mobile versions, the keyboard for the smartphone uses an OTG adapter; however, if OTG mode is not supported by the device, a wireless Bluetooth keyboard can be connected. Alternatively, third-party applications can be used to enable the virtual keyboard, such as "iGame keyboard".

Oversights[]

Cheating in GTA San Andreas has been proven to have some negative effects on missions and gameplay. The following list contains side effects that may arise by playing the game with cheats. To avoid any of these side effects, it is recommended to use cheat codes only after the game has been completed or on an alternate save file. However, some minor side effects from a save file with cheats can spread onto a file without cheats.

Cheating decreases the criminal rating by 10 (except for the "health and armor" cheat).
The "infinite ammo" cheat may cause the audio to glitch up. The reason this happens is unknown.
Enabling the "all cars explode" cheat in some gameplay cutscenes in some missions will cause the screen to freeze and the player will be stuck in cutscene mode. The game will still be in process, but the mission cannot be continued on. The only way to escape from this situation is to reload a game save or commit suicide via cheats, hacks or other means.
Enabling the "health and armor" cheat during the bike chase of Just Business and during the drive-by portion of End of the Line will fail the mission, destroying the BF-400/Feltzer, and CJ will eventually be wasted.
- Also in Just Business, if the player has activated the "invulnerable cars" cheat before Big Smoke gets on the bike and then inputs the cheat during another cutscene, CJ won't get wasted, but the mission will fail, with the in-game text saying Big Smoke is killed.
Enabling the "health and armor" cheat during the Lure mission will immediately destroy the car doors, making the mission more difficult and challenging.
The "health and armor" cheat has no effect on the DA's car during 555 We Tip.
Enabling the "health and armor" cheat at any time during a taxi driver sub-mission will immediately empty the tip bar, making the player unable to get the speed bonus (this doesn't always happen on the PC version).
Enabling the "lock wanted level" cheat will cause a glitch in the Mike Toreno mission, stopping the script after the red marker (unless the "lock wanted level" cheat is disabled).
The "maximum fat and max muscle" cheats make it difficult for the player to date Helena Wankstein (unless the player collected all oysters).
The "minimum fat and minimum muscle" cheats make it difficult for the player to date Michelle Cannes and Barbara Schternvart (unless the player has collected all oysters).
The "super punches" cheat is not recommended during the riot events of Los Santos, since any civilian (including CJ) being punched with this cheat enabled on will automatically die (unless the infinite health cheat is also on).
The "recruit anyone" cheats reverse in effect during gang wars.
The missions Burning Desire, Life's a Beach, Photo Opportunity, and Madd Dogg cannot be completed if too many cheats have been used before them.
Enabling the Jetpack cheat whilst CJ has stepped on a red mission marker will cause the game to crash before the mission starts. This no longer happens on the PC version.
The "pedestrians riot" cheat makes the mission Madd Dogg impossible to complete, as Madd Dogg falls off before CJ has enough time to park the truck under him.
The "pedestrians riot" cheat also makes the mission Tanker Commander impossible to complete, as Mr. Whittaker will instantly attack Catalina upon meeting her, causing her to shoot him, making the cutscene softlock.
The "weapons sets 1, 2, and 3" cheats make the mission Air Raid impossible to complete, as the Minigun will be replaced by the Rocket Launcher, Flamethrower, and Heat-Seeking Rocket Launcher respectively.
Entering the "weapons set 2" cheat during the mission Tagging Up Turf will instantly fail the mission, as the Spray Can will be replaced by the Fire Extinguisher.
Entering the "kinky", "rural", "beach party", and "carnival" theme cheats during the Valet side mission will instantly fail the mission.
If the player inputs the "flying cars" cheat, and then drives a car into any body of water, CJ will become stuck in the car and will not be able to get out and will drown (unless the "flying cars" cheat is disabled and the "infinite oxygen" cheat is enabled). The same applies when bailing out whilst in the air (rarely).
If the player enters the "cars float away when hit" cheat too many times, cars will sometimes spawn in midair and fall from the sky. Also, random cars will explode as soon as CJ is within spawning distance of them.
If the player inputs the "flying cars" cheat, random NPC cars may suddenly lift off and fly away.
Enabling the "health and armor" cheat during the chase portion of the mission Reuniting the Families will not repair Sweet's car.
Enabling the "destroy all vehicles" cheat during the mission Reuniting The Families (possibly to quickly destroy cop cars and bikes) will make Sweet's car explode and CJ will be stuck inside the car (unable to get out and he will get killed). This includes the Tanker exploding before Sweet's Greenwood crashes into it, making the game stop.
If the "cars float on water" cheat is enabled, the Nevada, Rustler, Stuntplane and Cropduster will roll backwards when they spawn. It is unknown why this happens, but it is hypothesized that they roll backwards because their nose tilts upwards when parked.
Enabling time cheats may cause the in-game time to progress and it will never stop unless the cheat is enabled again (causing the clock to speed up like the "faster clock" cheat is enabled until it catches up to whatever it should be).
Enabling the maximum fat and maximum stamina cheats will disallow CJ from working out in any gym.
If the player has the "flying cars" cheat enabled while starting any racing side mission, all of the opponents' cars will lift off and fly away as soon as the race starts.
If the player has the riot cheat enabled, pedestrians can be seen fighting each other in the background during mission cutscenes. Sometimes, pedestrians may interfere with the cutscene and attack CJ. Alternatively, the characters may join in with the riot during the cutscene, making the cutscene softlock, thus requiring a reload or a reset as the player's controls are locked during cutscenes without mods or cheats.
Sometimes, when the player steals or attacks an NPC's car, they walk away instead of running away or fighting Carl. This cheating side effect can occur after only one cheat is activated.
If the player activates the "health and armor" cheat when driving a vehicle that is about to explode when the vehicle is fixed, the vehicle will still explode on some occasions.
Enabling the "raise wanted level" and "six-star wanted level" cheats during the mission 555 We Tip will instantly fail the mission.
Enabling the "invulnerable cars" cheat after getting in a car is ineffective because if the player tries to damage a car and that car explodes, their car will also smoke and explode, eventually wasting CJ (if the player fails to exit the car in time).
If the player enables the Jetpack cheat while having a private dance in a strip club, the dance will be skipped.
Enabling the "destroy all vehicles" cheat during missions that use a vehicle will cause the vehicle to explode, thus failing the mission.
If the player spawns a Rhino via a cheat code while driving a boat, such as a Jetmax, there is a chance that a serious bug/glitch will occur (see this video and this one). If the spawned tank collides with the player's boat, one or both might get thrown into the air. The player's coordinates will be warped to a very big value beyond overflow limit and this will cause the gameplay screen to freeze or crash the game. When this happens, the screen turns overly bright, flashes, and only shows a text that says "Loading...". The screen will remain stuck in this way unless the player pauses and restarts the game.
Inputting cheats while the game is lagging will sometimes cause the cheat being inputted not to be activated.

Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas[]

Up to seven (the normal GSF maximum) non-GSF peds can be recruited with cheats no matter how low CJ's respect is.
So far, Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas is the only game to have a cheat code wherein the player cannot (automatically) earn any wanted level for trespassing in any prohibited area (in the case of GTA San Andreas, San Fierro and Las Venturas if both cities have yet to be unlocked), as wanted levels cannot be disabled for trespassing in prohibited areas, including the Washington Beach Police Station in Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, the tarmac of Francis International Airport, the Civilization Committee Complex and the areas that have yet to be unlocked in Grand Theft Auto IV, and Fort Zancudo, Bolingbroke Penitentiary, Humane Labs and Research and the tarmac of Los Santos International Airport in Grand Theft Auto V (if the player has yet to purchase a hangar as Michael and Franklin or when playing as Trevor).
While the "armor and health" cheat is the only cheat that does not decrease the player's criminal rating, this is not due to the direct effect of the cheat, but because the cheat also grants the player $250,000. Since each increment of $5,000 will increase the player's rating by one point, the cheat ends up granting the player +40 ratings instead (+50 for $250,000 and -10 for cheat use).
If the "pedestrians attack Carl with guns" cheat is activated while on Vigilante missions, a glitch will occur where the targeted criminals will sometimes separate from their cars. For example, if Carl is on level 4 (where there are four criminals in a car), this cheat code will sometimes cause two of the criminals to abandon the car, while the other half will stay in it.
Enabling the "gang presence" cheat will also spawn the ninth and tenth gangs that are unused normally. If the player activates this cheat in areas outside of Los Santos, they will see Los Santos gangs spawn in other areas (even rural areas), in a similar fashion to the situation during the riot. However, the cheat cannot spawn Russian Mafia gangsters (that appear in some missions with unique models).
If the "time stuck at 00:00" cheat is used and some time has passed, sometimes an oval thing that resembles the sun, but is smaller in size appears. It has the same colour as sun.
The "invulnerable cars" cheat doesn't protect the player's vehicle from the machine gun shots from the Police Maverick or the gun on the Predators. If one of those vehicles explodes near CJ, his vehicle would be set on fire and explode, leading to a potential death or significant loss of health.
- Similarly, the cheat won't have an affect on boats (except for the Vortex). If the player had activated the cheat before CJ entered a boat and inputted the "destroy all vehicles" cheat code, the boat will still explode and CJ will most likely die.
If typing both the "gangs spawn much faster" and "gangs having gunfights" cheats, the Mafia will commonly spawn and act like a gang. Sometimes, they may be found holding beer bottles and they will even point a gun if provoked by nearby gunshots from other gang members or the player himself. They will drive in Admirals, Feltzers and Sentinels. This can happen on the PS2 and PC versions.
If the player has typed the "maximum lung capacity" cheat before, and then drives a car into the water, they will not lose the lung capacity nor health, and when the vehicle reaches the underwater ground, its lights will turn off if they were turned on beforehand change and Carl will be able to drive it, albeit at a slower pace than on the ground. The player can also use this trick to drive their vehicle out of the water and then return to the land. However, if the player exits the vehicle while driving on the seafloor, it will be impossible to return to the car.
- If doing this trick in some missions, the mission will fail, as the game will deem the vehicle to have been destroyed. The sunk vehicle still remains intact, however.
Typing the "Carl's vehicle becomes invincible and can destroy other vehicles instantly" cheat and then quickly deactivating it before Carl gets in the vehicle will make the car invincible.
By recruiting a police officer via the "recruit anyone in your gang" cheat, one will find the recruited police officer will immediately open fire on street criminals upon sighting one, even if they're not doing any crime, just walking around or driving their vehicle. The same applies when using the same cheat to recruit normal NPCs.
If one turns on the "pedestrians attack Carl with guns" cheat, police officers will be replaced by motor officers (Who are on foot instead of riding a motorcycle) and soldiers. Normal pedestrians will be replaced by countryside pedestrians, construction workers and bikers. Gang members will still spawn. Fire Trucks and Ambulances will still respond to emergencies, but will never take care of the problem, instead driving recklessly.
If one turns on the "pedestrians attack Carl with the golf club" cheat, police officers are sometimes affected. In this case, they may use their fists instead of their regular pistols.
By giving weapons to the pedestrians with the use of cheats, some drivers will come out of their vehicle whenever someone fires a gun and then fire at the shooter, such as taxi drivers and security guards.
- If they carry a melee weapon instead of a ranged weapon, they will ignore the gunshots.
- Some pedestrians on foot will also shoot whoever fires a gun, such as tramps.
The riot cheat is so far the only riot cheat in the Grand Theft Auto series that affects drivers, as it either makes them get out of their vehicle and start fighting pedestrians, or it makes their vehicle explode.
If the player pulls out a weapon while having the "pedestrians hate CJ" cheat on, all pedestrians will run away and all drivers will drive recklessly as long as they are unarmed.
On Android, the "complete invincibility" cheat makes any vehicle CJ drives indestructible and unable to be destroyed by explosions. If the player damages a vehicle until it catches fire and then quickly enters it before it explodes, the vehicle will remain on fire indefinitely without exploding, and the flames will persist even if CJ exits and damages the vehicle even more. This won't work with the similar "unlimited health" cheat, as this one doesn't grant CJ or his vehicles immunity to explosions.
