Help required: categories

Hi everyone, please help us by filling out this form!

We are determining how players best define and/or differentiate the terms "game modes", "missions" and "activities". This will be used to help us develop a clear and logical category tree to house articles related to this type of content.

GTA V Vehicles types[]

Closed as making seperate pages. I will de-combine currently shared categories of vehicles (like 4-door sedans and coupes will now be separate), and destroy the originals. MONKEYPOLICE188 (talk) | (stalk) 20:00, February 23, 2015 (UTC) I have been discussing with Smashbro8, Myth Hunter and Tevano about the vehicle classes in GTA V, and i thought of something. We all know how messed up vehicle categories are on this wiki, and i was thinking should the categories be based off the HD Universe counterparts, eg Sports, Super, Van, Sedan, Commercials, Industrials, Helicopters, Planes, Military etc. I have some positive issues and negative issues, for example, for the Infernus, it might share the category for not only Super, but Sports, because of it being a sporty car in GTA III, SA etc. The Voodoo, in GTAV, is classed as a muscle car, but in reality, it is a Lowrider, so should we have a 'Lowrider' category?

So, overall, do you think the categories should be based on GTA V categories only, or should we make separate categories? MONKEYPOLICE188 (talk) | (stalk) 19:08, February 23, 2015 (UTC)

Votes - Yes = do GTA V only categories - No = stay how it is/make separate categories for each game.

  • I'm more inclined towards voting yes, as GTA V is the only game to "officially" categorise vehicles. With the 3D Universe vehicles, categories are open to interpretation because they are not officially specified. SJWalker (talk) 19:25, February 23, 2015 (UTC)
  • The only trouble is the fact that assuming is also correct, as the Voodoo is a lowrider, but is categorized as a muscle car in-game. MONKEYPOLICE188 (talk) | (stalk) 19:29, February 23, 2015 (UTC)
  • I see what you mean, as the Voodoo is a lowrider, but as Rain said, we have to go by what the game dictates. If the games says it's a muscle car, it's a muscle car. I can't see how myself, but that's how it is. SJWalker (talk) 19:39, February 23, 2015 (UTC)
  • As Rain always says: "GTA V is not the only GTA game in the series" so I think we should consider all the other games first, we can't say that a Donkey is a Stallion Horse just because the president says that. AndreEagle17 (talk/stalk/blog) 19:44, February 23, 2015 (UTC)

  • Fair point. That's just me taking a "By the book" approach (which doesn't always work). SJWalker (talk) 19:46, February 23, 2015 (UTC)
  • I agree with Andre.-Hunter(Talk/Stalk) 19:50, February 23, 2015 (UTC)
  • I agree with Rain we have to go as the game dictates TevanoRCMP (talk) 12:42, February 24, 2015 (UTC)

Vehicle categories[]

Let us just take one giant step back for a minute and think about this clearly.

Why do we have have wiki categories in the 1st place?[]

A category page is supposed to allow a wiki user to navigate to find related items. So if there is a category for example for Sedan vehicles, it should contain every vehicle that has ever been a sedan in a game appearance. Yes, that means some cases a vehicle page will have multiple (sometimes conflicting) categories assigned to it if it fits into them at some point in its evolution.

What game(s) specify categories?[]

So far, only GTA V has defined vehicle classes. This wiki MUST ALWAYS reflect what the game developers have designed, regardless of our OPINION on whether that is right or wrong. If Rockstar called the beater Voodoo in GTA V a Muscle car, then we must include "Muscle" category on the Voodoo page. Sure, we can include Low-rider and Sedan Sports Classic as well, because it fits both those classifications too, but we cannot REMOVE "Muscle" just because we think it was wrong of them to class it as one.

So, going forward, what do we need to do then?[]

All GTA V defined vehicle classes should be an individual category. All GTA V defined categories should be assigned to their respective vehicles as defined in game. Then, we can cross-assign categories to vehicles we think fit.

Capiche?  smurfy (coms) 20:44, February 23, 2015 (UTC)

A couple of references... GTAV Named classes and GTA Onilne race classes. Both should be reflected in the category assigned to each vehicle. So we can see Off-road assigned to some vehicles that aren't named as off-road but are eligible to be raced e.g. the Tornado (Mariachi variant). smurfy (coms) 21:40, February 23, 2015 (UTC)

As I said, we can't call the Donkey as a Stallion Horse just because the president says that, as Hunter said, the Tornado could also be considered an Off-road car. AndreEagle17 (talk/stalk/blog) 20:59, February 23, 2015 (UTC)
Sorry Andre, but that is 100% wrong. We as wikians are here to document whatever Rockstar (aka the President) say. So if the president says the Stallion is a Donkey, we have to tell people that the president calls it a donkey. We can also note that we think it's a stallion, but we MUST reflect what is in the game. That is our #1 purpose. If we stop doing that, we are no longer a wiki, we're just a fan-site. smurfy (coms) 21:40, February 23, 2015 (UTC)
Smurfy, could you please check your unanswered messages from me on your talk page, thanks. MONKEYPOLICE188 (talk) | (stalk) 22:08, February 23, 2015 (UTC)
Sean, i'm basically saying that we can't say something like "Oh, the Voodoo is a muscle car" or "The Musket is a Shotgun", but instead say "The Voodoo is a lowrider, despite being classified as a Muscle car in GTA V" or "The Brown Bess is a Musket, however, in GTA V it's classified as a shotgun", do you know what I mean? We will not be out of our purpose by saying that the Voodoo is really a Lowrider or the Musket is really a Musket (oh Andre you don't say), we must give people the information according to Rockstar, but we should also reflect in real life/inspiration too, if it wasn't by inspiration, then we should never say a car's real life inspiration... AndreEagle17 (talk/stalk/blog) 01:44, February 24, 2015 (UTC)
Not the same Andre. A lowrider is usually a modified variant of either a muscle car or a sports classic. Lowriders are cars that ride low (no shit) and usually have a hydraulics system. Most cars like the Tornado, Peyote, Voodoo etc. are usually sports classics or muscle cars. A good way of saying it would be The Voodoo is a sports classic in the 3D Universe that also features as a lowrider in Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas. I also believe the black Voodoo in VC is a lowrider. Leo68 (talk) 01:55, February 24, 2015 (UTC)
Kind of, yes. What I am saying is there are two parts to this. One is compulsory. We MUST cite the in-game definition, without exception. If Rockstar have defined something, we must state that, whether we think it's a mistake on the developers part or not - and let's face it, we know they make plenty of mistakes.
Whether we include a "correction/qualification" statement on an article is completely OPTIONAL.
With the specific example of the Voodoo, we have to say it's a Muscle car, and we can also say "it's really still a lowrider" if we want to.  smurfy (coms) 01:57, February 24, 2015 (UTC)

Yes Leo, it always was, even in GTA IV, see, the Peyote and the Manana are lowriders, but are correctly classified as sports classics. AndreEagle17 (talk/stalk/blog) 01:59, February 24, 2015 (UTC)

Understood Sean, this is the same reason why I never removed the Musket from the "Shotguns" category, if it's not a shotgun in the game, than what the hell would it be? AndreEagle17 (talk/stalk/blog) 02:02, February 24, 2015 (UTC)
Re the specific example of the Voodoo.
any of a group of American-made 2-door sports coupes with powerful engines designed for high-performance driving. A large V8 engine is fitted in a 2-door, rear wheel drive, family-style mid-size or full-size car designed for four or more passengers.
— Wikipedia definition of a Muscle Car
The Voodoo is based on a '60-64 Impala, with SS badge and fitted with a big V8. It doesn't really perform like one in the game but it fits the definition of a muscle car to a "T" and Wikipedia even defines its inspiration/source vehicle as one. smurfy (coms) 02:22, February 24, 2015 (UTC)

Well, now I feel like the world is conspiring against me :p I better check something before talking about it. AndreEagle17 (talk/stalk/blog) 02:27, February 24, 2015 (UTC)

In your defence, I agreed with you that it's not REALLY a muscle car, mainly because its performance is so poor. It may have the big V8 and the SS badge but it performs like the base Impala with the in-line 6. That can be partially explained by the lack of maintenance being a beater, the hp of the engine may have been lost too. smurfy (coms) 02:33, February 24, 2015 (UTC)

A car that it's not really a Muscle car but it fits perfect in the Muscle category is the Rat-Loader, it performs very well for a pickup truck :) no joke, it can win a Gauntlet in the hands of an experienced driver... Some cars are categorized as such because of their performance, the Oracle for an example is comparable to a F620. AndreEagle17 (talk/stalk/blog) 02:44, February 24, 2015 (UTC)
Well, that's because there isn't a "hotrod" class, so R* put the rat-rod (rat-loader) and hot-rod (hotknife) into the muscle class which was probably the best place for them. As for the coupes, and the abundance of 4-dr coupes (Oracle, Jackal, Felon, Exemplar), this seems to have been more for racing balancing than consistent vehicle classification. smurfy (coms) 02:55, February 24, 2015 (UTC)

All I can say is that, if Rockstar calls voodoo a muscle car we have to include that. That is our first proliority but we should also have what the car actually is. We can say "even though musket is more close to rifle, it is called a shotgun in GTA V". @Andre: No one(atleast not me) is conspuring against you.Hunter(Talk/Stalk) 11:47, February 24, 2015 (UTC)

Yeah, some cars are categorized according to their performance, the Bison for an example, could be very well classified as a SUV, but it handles like a van if tested, however, this is sometimes not consistent, the Faggio (creeps me out to talk about it) is still classified as a bike but it shows up as an utility vehicle in GTA Online races.
