Career Builder is the character creation and tutorial system in the Expanded & Enhanced Edition of Grand Theft Auto Online for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.

Description[]

The tutorial from the original version of GTA Online, which was skippable in the Enhanced Version, has been removed. When creating a new character, the player uses the Career Builder.

The player is shown a small cutscene of a bank vault being blown open and $4,000,000 is awarded to their account. The player then has to choose an initial career path from the four available options: Executive, Gunrunner, Nightclub Owner or Biker.

Each career path allows the player to purchase their choice of business base of operations from a sub-set of the properties available, including some packaged upgrades, vehicles and weapons.

Criminal Enterprise Starter Pack discount also apply.

The player is presented with a summary of the options selected with the total spent and cash remaining from their $4,000,000. Once they have spent at least $3,000,000 and selected at least one item from each category, they can then start their career and enter Free Mode.

Start Career[]

Character Creator[]

Main article: Character Creator

The same character creator system from the Enhanced version is used to design the player character.

Free Mode Tutorial[]

The player then loads into a Free mode session alone. They walk out of Mission Row Police Station and are given some basic on-foot control instructions.

The Garage Mechanic then sends them a text message, providing a tutorial on how to use the Mobile Phone, the first indication that this player is returning to Los Santos, rather than being fresh off the plane as they were in 2013.

Hey boss. Great - you're finally out! Look, I've dropped your wheels nearby to help you get around. Call me if you need any help with your vehicles - I'm still listed under Mechanic on your phone.
— Mechanic's text message

The player enters their vehicle and there is a brief in-vehicle controls tutorial.

If the player chose to only purchase specialized or weaponized vehicles, they will be gifted a white Maibatsu Penumbra as the personal vehicle to use instead.

You have been gifted an additional Personal Vehicle. This free Maibatsu Penumbra is shown on the radar nearby. You can request Personal Vehicles by calling your Mechanic.

Lamar Davis then sends a text message:

Hey it's your boy LD. Good to see you back on the streets. I heard you was up for release and stashed them pieces for you. Go pick 'em up. With your kinda record, you don't wanna be walking around this town without a strap. Trust me!
— Lamar's text

The player is directed to Grove Street and this serves as a tutorial for the GPS system. Upon arrival, they find a duffel bag containing their weapons with four Ballas nearby.

Collect the weapon stash

This provides the player with their purchased weapons and Body Armor and the four Ballas members provide the opportunity for a brief combat controls tutorial.

The Ballas are one of several gangs across Los Santos and Blaine County. Enemies are marked with a (red dot icon) on the radar.

Lamar then sends another text.

Hey if you run into any Ballas, don't be looking for no peaceful resolution. Just shoot enough of them fools to make your point, get a fast set of wheels, and get gone.
— Lamar
Leave the area.

This gives the player a brief vehicle combat tutorial.

The player's chosen career path then decides the next message received. Their business contact, Assistant, Agent 14, Tony Prince or Malc will message the player to call them to their business location.

Business Tutorials[]

Boss! Your Executive Assistant here. They let you out? Couldn't make it stick, eh? Anyway, your new office is all set up and ready to go. Come round as soon as you can, and we can get this business off the ground and making money!
— Assistant text message

So, you're the mysterious buyer, eh? I won't ask where you've been hiding lately. Best if you come down to your new Bunker as soon as you can - and, listen, try not to get yourself followed.
— Agent 14's text

Hey, Tony Prince here. The Tony Prince. So, you're the new landlord? Listen, I won't pry into your past, but I can help future you - help you run the best Nightclub in the state! And more besides, if you know what I'm saying. Cash, kid, cash. Come over as soon as you can and let's get Los Santos partying!
— Tony Prince's text

Yo. You the cat that took the clubhouse outta receivership? I'm like, the manager-caretaker. Swing by the joint and I'll talk you through a few things. I'll tell you what you need to know - but won't dig into your past. We've all done things... anyway, come by asap.
— Malc's text
