Buried Stashes are a recurring collectible in Grand Theft Auto Online, added as part of the continuation of The Criminal Enterprises update released during Cayo Perico Series Week on August 11, 2022.
Description[]
Random Event Unlock[]
In order to unlock the search for the stashes, players must find a skeleton in one of ten random locations around the south coast of Los Santos. The appearance of the skeleton is a random event and its blue dot will be visible to all players in the session whenever they are close to it.
A Metal Detector is located near the skeleton. Players need to interact with it to pick it up.
The skeleton is holding a treasure map of Cayo Perico which can be inspected.
If not collected within 10 real-time minutes (4 hours in-game), the skeleton and Metal Detector will de-spawn and re-spawn again later (randomly cycling with the Drunk Guard and Drug Vehicle events). Multiple players can loot the Metal Detector from one skeleton.
If the Metal Detector collection has been completed, finding and interacting with another skeleton will reward players with $5,000-$10,000 cash and provides another opportunity to inspect the map.

Stashes[]
Starting from August 11, 2022, Buried Stashes are made available for players to find in Cayo Perico during scoping for the heist.
Each real-life day, two stashes will spawn at random locations.
Two search zones will be marked on the map by wide translucent white circles and a in the center.
As soon as the player enters the marked area, on-screen instructions will inform them to use the weapon aim button to start using the Metal Detector. The weapon aim button is not enabled anywhere else on the island, and the player will be informed that they have no weapons.
As the player gets closer to the stash, the signal bars will increase, the lights will flash faster and the beeping noise will intensify. If they start moving away from the locations, these visual and audio clues will reduce again. When the player is virtually on top of the stash, the sound will be continuous.
The location of the stash will then be marked on the map with a marker. A visible mound of pale sand will be visible to any players who have a Metal Detector.
The player will then be prompted to dig up the stash and a short cutscene will play of them digging with their hands, pulling up an ammunition box and opening it, and pocketing the stash that was inside. The player will be invisible to other players during this sequence. Every player who is on the scoping mission can dig up their own cache, provided they have unlocked the event by collecting a Metal Detector. Players who do not have a Metal Detector will not even see the stash mound.
They will each give the player $15,000 and 1,000 RP upon collection.
After collecting their first Buried Stash, the Daily Collectibles section of the player's Interaction Menu has a tally of the daily stashes.
Once the player has collected both, they must wait until the next day (resets at 0600 UTC) if they wish to collect more. Note that the skeleton and metal detector only need to be located once; the spawns will continue thereafter.

Trivia[]
- Buried Stashes were intended to be available to collect as part of the Los Santos Tuners update. The sound effects for the mini-game; sound data for the Metal Detector and sounds for the stash unlocks, as well as the mission instructions and script data for the mini-game, could be found in the game's files. With the release of The Criminal Enterprises update, Buried Stashes became available with a few minor changes.[1][2]
