This subpage documents removed and changed missions during the development of Grand Theft Auto Advance.
The following information is obtained from ROM leftovers and Digital Eclipse's GTA Advance: Game Design Document (Version 1.3, 26th February 2003).
Storyline Changes[]
The storyline of Grand Theft Auto Advance always had the same premise – the protagonist and his friend get enough money through Mafia favors in order to leave the city, but the friend is killed on the day of the getaway. However, in the original 2003 script, the outcome of the storyline is completely different from the final version, with two different outcomes depending on the order of missions played.
Due to hardware limitations of the Game Boy Advance, the story had to be simplified into a linear storyline in the final version. As a result, smaller characters such as Cisco, Jonnie and King Courtney became major characters in the final version, with the protagonist's friend Reg (rebranded as Vinnie) became the main antagonist.
The original concept of the storyline featured 21 extra side-missions intended to be played during or after the main storyline, all of which were entirely cut from the game and replaced with the Promoter's side-missions.
The two main antagonistic gangs – the Scorelli Crime Family and Russian Mafia – were entirely removed from the storyline, with one remaining "Scorelli" character being reduced to an unseen character affiliated with the Southside Hoods instead. Meanwhile, the Liberty City Triads gang, originally intended to be a major group of allies, had their entire role in the storyline removed.
Mission Progress Changes[]
Original concept for the storyline progress in Grand Theft Auto Advance.[1]
Instead of the linear mission unlocking progress from the final version, the original concept of the game sees the player following the first part of the storyline bringing them to two different leads on his friend's killer. Depending on the order in which the missions are played, one of the leads may end up being false, forcing them to follow the other lead, which will end up being correct.
The player follows the same storyline missions in Portland, starting with Reg's mission strand and 8-Ball's mission strand.
The mission strand for 8-Ball unlocks the Bartender's mission strand, and at the same time will reveal the first lead to Reg's killer, leading the player to Shoreside Vale and eventually investigate the Scorelli Crime Family with the Triads' guidance.
If following the Bartender's mission strand, the player will be forced to move to Staunton Island and eventually find the second lead to Reg's killer, leading the player to investigate the Russian Mafia with the Yakuza's guidance.
Depending on which of the two leads are considered the true one (chosen by the game depending on the order of missions played), a mission strand based on that lead will be unlocked, leading the player to the game's ending.
No major changes compared to the final version of Jump Start by Vinnie.
The protagonist Ned "The Kid" Braden drives his friend Reg Dunlop to meet an informant (undecided location as of February 2003).
Description:
“This is the first mission, and will center on learning about navigation and driving a car. The goal will be to take the controls of a car and drive it to a particular location to meet an informant.”
Brief:
“Hey Ned, I need you to take the wheel until we get to (TBD). I gotta get my head together for this meeting... Hey, don't worry! It'll be okay. If I play our cards right, we'll be off this stinkin' island in no time.”

Bargaining Chip (R&N 2)[]
Early iteration of Dirty Laundry, Vinnie's second mission, except the player kidnaps the target instead of killing him.
At the informant's gang contact point, Reg hands down a task from the group that will earn them some extra cash: capture a gang member for the group.
The player is rewarded with $1000.
Description:
“Now that Reg is conducting business, the Kid needs something to stay busy with. Reg hands down a task from the group that will earn them some extra cash.”
Brief:
“Sorry to keep you waiting so long... the guys upstairs said they could use a hand catching up with one of their guys, but he skipped out a while ago. If you could find him and bring him back here, it might make our case stronger. Don't kill him, though — I'll need him alive. Maybe break his nose if you want...”

Get-a-Way Out (R&N 3)[]
Early iteration of Hot Wheels, Vinnie's third mission. No major changes compared to the final version.
The Kid continues to work for Reg's informant's group to get enough money to leave town. Kid wants to have more involvement with the process, but Reg keeps briefing him in as much detail as possible without giving away the whole thing.
Reg tasks the Kid to steal a fast getaway car to help them leave town – specifically a Banshee that's currently just sitting in the lot – and drop it off at a secluded location.
Both locations are undecided as of the February 2003 version of the Design Document.
The player is rewarded with $2000.
Description:
“As Ned's negotiations continue it's only natural for the Kid to want to have more involvement with the process. Reg makes sure to brief him in as much detail as possible, without directly giving away the whole thing.”
Brief:
“Okay Ned, it looks like this is going to work out. They're ready to help us get out of the city, but we're going to need a car — a fast one. Head over to (TBD) —there's a wicked Banshee that I have in mind just sitting in the lot. Grab it, get it spray painted, and drop it off at (TBD). Then come back here and we'll work on getting the money ready for transport.”

10-Minute Photo (R&N 4)[]
Early iteration of Fake IDs, Vinnie's sixth mission. No major changes compared to the final version, except for the fake IDs' placement.
In order to get out of town and start over in their new life, Reg tasks the Kid to acquire some fake IDs, which an old friend of his – 8-Ball – can provide.
After meeting up with 8-Ball at his bomb shop (listed as a location used in this mission), the Kid collects the fake IDs at the Ammu-Nation gun store, presumably from Steve Frazer.
The player is rewarded with $2500.
Description:
“In order to get out of town and start over in their new life, the Kid and his partner need some fake IDs. 8-Ball does more than just rig cars, so the Kid is sent there to acquire the new documents.”
Brief:
“We're real close here, Ned. I need you to pick up some fake IDs so we can get out of here without anyone asking any questions. The guy that runs the Bomb Shop, 8-Ball, is an old friend of mine. He'll be able to hook you up.”

Going, Going, Gone (R&N 5)[]
Early iteration of Getaway, Vinnie's seventh mission, except the vehicle destroyed is seemingly the getaway Banshee, and meeting with 8-Ball happens post-mission passed screen.
After acquiring the fake IDs provided by 8-Ball, Reg and the Kid can finally leave town with the money Kid earned for both of them through the gang negotiations.
Reg contacts Kid saying he's going to collect the money and meet him somewhere (undecided location in the Design Document).
Upon arriving at the getaway car location, the Kid witnesses Reg dying in a car bomb explosion, losing the money they earned to leave town. The mission is completed after the explosion, with no need to clear a wanted level.
The player is rewarded with $1500.
Description:
“With all of the pieces in place, Reg just needs to pick up the money and meet the Kid. Piece of cake...”
Brief:
“Okay Ned, I just need to grab the money and we're ready to go. Meet me at (TBD) in five minutes, and we'll get the hell out of here for good.”
Special circumstances:
“When Kid goes to get into car, it explodes”

8-Ball's Mission Strand[]
It Fell off the Truck (8-Ball 1)[]
Early iteration of Twisted Metal, 8-Ball's first mission, without the car crusher task.
After witnessing Reg's death in the car bomb, the Kid receives a pager message from 8-Ball telling him to meet him at his bomb shop.
8-Ball, being a close friend of Reg's, claims he might have a lead on why Reg was killed, but in the meantime, he asks the Kid to collect a shipment of explosives from the docks and bring it to 8-Ball's bomb shop.
The player is supplied with an Uz-I during the mission, and later rewarded with $2000 for completion.
Description:
“With Reg on ice, the Kid has no idea where to turn. Luckily, a pager message from 8-Ball gives him a chance to figure out what's happened.”
Brief:
“(Pager) Come to the Bomb Shop. We need to talk. (8-Ball) Sorry to hear about Reg, man. He was a good friend of mine, and I want to know what happened to him as much as you do. I have some ideas who might be behind it. Reg always did have a nose for trouble... In the meantime, I could use your help. I need some plastique like yesterday. There's a shipment coming in at (TBD). Bring some back here, and I'll give you a little pocket change in return.”

The Oldest Profession (8-Ball 2)[]
Early iteration of Ill Repute, 8-Ball's second mission.
8-Ball reveals that he's got connections with the city's "entertainment workers", who provided him with some reliable income with the pimping business.
The Kid is tasked to replace 8-Ball's regular driver and deliver some prostitutes to high-rolling clients.
The player is supplied with an Uz-I during the mission, and later rewarded with $2000 for completion.
Description:
“8-Ball's previous connections with the city's "entertainment workers" has provided him with some reliable income. But with his regular driver out of commission, the Kid proves to be a handy substitute.”
Brief:
“Hey Kid, I could use your driving skills right about now. I got some girls that work for me that need to clock in for some high-rolling clients. Go pick them up and then drop them off to their Johns. I'll make sure you get a cut of the proceeds.”

8-Ball tasks the Kid to deliver a volatile shipment of explosives to an impatient client.
The player is rewarded with $3000 for completion.
Description:
“8-Ball has friends in high places, and a few of them are waiting impatiently for an overdue delivery. Looks like another situation for the Kid to handle.”
Brief:
“I got another job for you, Kid. I have some very unhappy customers that are waiting for a late shipment of supplies from me. Do me a favor and deliver their explosives to them. Just be careful — this stuff is pretty volatile. The car out back is all packed and ready to go.”
Special circumstances:
“Too much damage to the car will cause it to explode.”

The Kid is tasked to rescue him and bring him back to the bar (undecided location in the Design Document).
The player is rewarded with $3000 for completion, and the Bartender is unlocked as a new mission contact.
Description:
“One of 8-Ball’s associates is in hot water across town. It's up to the Kid to rescue him and bring him back to the bar where 8-Ball’s people can keep him safe.”
Brief:
“Hey Kid, sorry to get you so involved in my personal life, but a good friend of mine has been kidnapped by (rival gang). I want you to rescue him and bring him back to the bar at (TBD). I know it's dangerous, but I'll make it worth your while. The bartender should be able to hook you up, too.”

The player is rewarded with $4000 for completion.
Description:
“8-Ball doesn't talk much about his personal life, but this time, he's in need of a very swift bit of revenge. And who better to pull it off than his reliable new associate?”
Brief:
“Look Kid, I'm not going into detail on this one — I need a guy rubbed out. I'd handle it myself, but I can't risk being fingered. You'll probably find him somewhere near (TBD). Just make sure you finish the job, and don't leave any fingerprints.”

The Most Toys (8-Ball 6)[]
Early interation of Scorelli, 8-Ball's fourth mission.
8-Ball says one of his contacts wants a very specific gang member's car. However, the vehicle is guarded by the gang member's thugs.
The Kid is tasked to go to the vehicle's location (undecided in the Design Document), kill the guards and steal the vehicle. The vehicle must be delivered to 8-Ball's bomb shop, where he will pay what the car is worth.
The player is supplied with a Pistol during the mission, and later rewarded with $5000 for completion.
Description:
“Another of 8-Ball’s friends needs a slick car. But it's not just any car off the street he wants — it's a rival gang member's pride and joy!”
Brief:
“Alright Kid, this one is going to be tricky. A friend of mine wants a very specific car, and it belongs to (rival gang member). Of course, it's his pride and joy, so it's guarded by one of his thugs full-time. You're going to have to take out the guard, jack the car, and then get it sprayed before anyone can track you down. Once you've done that, bring it back here and I'll do my magic on it. I can't pay you what the car is worth, but you'll get a hefty cut of my fee.”

Track-a-Mole (8-Ball 7 - REMOVED)[]
8-Ball suspects that one of his customers might have a connection with the car bomb explosion that killed Reg.
He claims that this one specific customer, who he thought had retired from the explosives business, is the only person he knows who would do this kind of job.
8-Ball suggests the Kid scope out the Red Light District, where he might spot the guy looking for a prostitute.
After identifying the customer, the Kid must beat him up until he reveals that, after he stopped working for 8-Ball, he met another explosives expert in Shoreside Vale, who deals from a secluded place somewhere on the island (undecided location in the Design Document).
A Turbo Banshee is awarded to the player with the completion of 8-Ball's mission strand.[2]
Description:
“8-Ball has figured out that one of his customers might have a connection with Reg's death. The Kid needs to find him to find out who he's working for.”
Brief:
“Look Kid... I gota request to doa job from a customer the other day, but I don't do those kinds of jobs anymore. But the more I think about it, the more it sounds like what happened to Reg. There's only one person I know who might do that kind of job, but I thought he was out of business. You can probably find my customer down in the Red Light District — he's almost always out there looking for a shady lady. Go rough him up a bit — he'll squeal like a pig if he knows anything.”
Customer found:
“Look, I don't know anything about your partner! All I know is after 8-Ball turned me down, I found a guy over in Shoreside Vale that would do the job. He works out of a little hole in the wall in (TBD). Go talk to him!”

Bartender's Mission Strand[]
Dear John (Bartender 1)[]
Early iteration of Sober Driver, Jonnie's first mission, with an entirely different context.
The Bartender informs the Kid that 8-Ball's ex-lover turned hooker might have a lead on some valuable information about one of 8-Ball's former clients.
To obtain that information, the Kid must have at least $1000. The Design Document specifies that if the player doesn't hurry, the hooker will be killed for unknown reasons.
The player is rewarded with $1000 for completion.
Description:
“This is the introductory mission for the Bartender, and should represent a diversion from the typical nature of the missions the player has encountered thus far, at least in terms of presentation. To that end, the first mission involves the player tracking down a hooker with some very valuable information. Problem is, if he doesn't hurry, the hooker will be dead.”
Brief:
“Hey Kid, I know you're friends with 8-Ball and all, but rumor has it that after he and his old lady split up, she went out on the street to make a living. You might want to track her down — she's got some dirt on one of his former clients that I could use... Plus, I hear she's real good with her hands, if you know what I mean! Heh heh!”
Special circumstances:
“Kid must have $1000 to get the information.”
— "Portland missions - Bartender"; GTA Advance: Game Design Document - Version 1.3, 26th February 2003. Digital Eclipse. (Page 34)
Dirty Laundry (Bartender 2 - REMOVED)[]
The title of this mission is reused for the new iteration of "Bargaining Chip" in the final version.
The Bartender reveals to the Kid that he quit his previous profession because the cops were closing in on him, and he suspects there is still someone out there who might lead them to him.
He wants the Kid to track down and eliminate a narc. Arriving at the first possible location, the Kid will find a clue as to where he went. Eventually the Kid locates the narc and kills him.
The player is rewarded with $5000 for completion.
Description:
“Having returned to the Bartender with the information, the Kid has earned some level of trust. This time, the Bartender needs his help to clean up an ugly episode in his former life.”
Brief:
“Look Kid, this is kind of sensitive, but I need your help here. I got out of my previous profession because the cops were closing in on me, and it looks like there's still be someone out there who might lead them to me. I want you to track him down and make sure he never talks again. You should be able to find him at (TBD). I don't care how you do it, just make sure he's dead.”
Special circumstances:
“the narc won't be at the first location, but there will be a clue as to where he went.”

Finders Keepers (Bartender 3)[]
Early iteration of Pocket Rocket, Jonnie's fifth mission. No major changes except for the target weapon and the ability to keep any weapons found in the docks.
The Bartender overhears a conversation between some people inside his bar, and discovers that a shipment of weapons has just arrived at the docks.
The Kid must steal any weapons from the shipment and deliver them to the bar. The Bartender suggests he would pay a good price if the Kid gets him a Flamethrower.
The player is rewarded with $3000 for completion.
Description:
“A little hear-say can go a very long way. The Bartender shares a rumor with the Kid that ends up being very lucrative.”
Brief:
“Hey Kid, check this out. I overheard a conversation a little while ago — these guys were talking about jacking a weapons delivery at the dock. They didn't say where, but you should check it out and see if you can grab something good. I'll pay you fair market price for a good flamethrower.”
Special circumstances:
“The Kid gets multiple weapons when finding the shipment.”

Payback is a Bitch (Bartender 4)[]
Early iteration of Political Will, Jonnie's sixth mission. No major changes, except for a different target instead of the Senator, and one additional objective.
The Bartender informs the Kid about a deadbeat customer who owes him money, and tasks him to find and beat him up using either fists of a Baseball Bat. In order to get the debt settled, the Bartender suggests the Kid steal his car, get it painted and deliver it to the impound yard.
The player is rewarded with $2000 for completion.
Description:
“The Kid takes on a more involved role as the Bartender's go-to guy. This time, it's a patron who hasn't kept up with his bar tab.”
Brief:
“Well Kid, I've got something for you to do if you're bored. I've got a deadbeat customer who hasn't paid his tab in a month, and I need him to understand he can't do that. I don't want him dead — just rough him up with a bat or your fists, and bring his car here. Oh, and get it painted before you do. I'll take it to the impound yard to get my payment.”

Trading Places (Bartender 5)[]
Early iteration of Show the Money, Jonnie's seventh mission. No major changes except for the pickup item, which was originally a package instead of a briefcase of money.
The Bartender wants the Kid to collect a package for him, but he is suspicious of the dealer.
The player is rewarded with $7500 for completion.
Description:
“The Bartender needs a delivery boy, and the Kid is just the guy for the job.”
Brief:
“Based on our working relationship, I think I can trust you enough to do a pretty important job for me. I need to collect a package, but there's a chance it's a trap. So, I want you to go get it for me. If anyone tries to catch you, just play dumb. I know it's asking a lot, but trust me; I'll make it worth your while.”

For each police car stolen, the Kid will receive a 3-star wanted level.
The player is rewarded with $10000 for completion.
Description:
“Another rumor from the Bartender leads the Kid into a very dangerous but lucrative mission.”
Brief:
“Hey Kid, I heard another rumor floating around that might interest you. There's a guy downtown that needs some skilled labor — someone who can steal cop cars. None of the paint shops around here will spray a cop car, but this guy apparently has some connections. He just needs the raw materials. You might want to check him out. But be careful — the cops are on high alert right now.”
Special circumstances:
“Kid's wanted level rises to 3 stars when a car is stolen.”

Part of Show the Money, Jonnie's seventh mission, in the final version as one of the final objectives. A few changes compared to the final objective, mainly due to the fact that the Bartender is alive in this version.
The Bartender's luck just ran out and the cops are onto him. He asks the Kid to take him to the safe house location.
Upon staring the mission, the Kid will receive a 3-star wanted level.
The player is rewarded with $10000 for completion.
Description:
“The Bartender's luck just ran out. It's up to the Kid to drive him off to a safehouse before the cops can track him down.”
Brief:
“Kid! I'm glad you're here — I need someone to get me out of here! The cops got some dirt on me and they're coming after me. I need to get to the safe house in (TBD), but the cops are going to be swarming all over this area looking for me. I don't care how you do it, just get me out of here!”

Grave Digger (Yardie1)[]
This mission's objectives are included as part of Show the Money, Jonnie's seventh mission, in the final version as one of the final objectives.
The Bartender informs the Kid that a member of the Uptown Yardies, a Jamaican gang in Staunton Island, is the individual who ratted on him. The Kid must chase a specific Yardie and catch him before he arrives at the gang's headquarters.
After killing the Yardie, the Kid takes over his contract position within the gang and begins working for King Courtney.
The player is rewarded with $2500 for completion.
Description:
“This mission revolves around tracking down the individual who ratted on the Bartender. The Kid must chase a specific Yardie and catch him before he makes it back to Yardie HQ. By catching and killing him before he can escape, the Kid takes over his Yardie contract position.”
Brief:
“Hey Kid, there's a guy who's in with the Yardies that put the cops on my trail. Do me a favor and rub him out. On second thought... those Yardies are a pretty extreme group. Maybe if you show them you can wipe out one of their own, you can get on the inside and learn more.”

Jacked-pot (Yardie2 - REMOVED)[]
This mission consisted of a robbery on Kenji's Casino. However, in the final version of the storyline, the Kenji's Casino building is still known as the Pachinko World, not owned by Kenji Kasen but under protection by the Yakuza.
The Kid begins working as a chauffeur for King Courtney to earn a little extra money. King Courtney tasks him to act as a getaway driver, as one of his guys is about to rob Kenji's Casino.
The Kid drives the Yardie to the casino, waits for him outside and escapes with the money in the getaway car while outrunning two Yakuza hitmen on the way back to the Yardie HQ.
The player is rewarded with $5000 for completion.
Description:
“The Yardies are looking to earn a little extra money, and the Kid makes a perfect chauffeur. He must deliver one of the Yardies to Kenji's casino, then drive the getaway car back to Yardie HQ. Outrunning and disabling two Yazuka hitmen before returning will cap it all off.”
Brief:
“We've heard from a couple of sources that you're a good getaway driver, Kid. If you're up to it, we want to hit Kenji's Casino, but we need a good wheelman. If you can get us there and back, we'll give you a hefty cut of the proceeds.”

Description:
“The Yardies need someone to deliver drugs to some very high-profile clientele, and the Kid is just the ticket. He must pick up the drugs from the Columbians[sic], then drop them off to four separate Cartel dealers before the cops catch wind and start butting their noses in where they don't belong.”
Brief:
“Listen up, Kid. We need someone to make some drug deliveries for us. Time is of the essence, but we don't need the cops getting suspicious, either. Take these drugs and deliver them to our Cartel contacts. There are four of them, so there's no time to screw around. Get back here as soon as you're done to collect your fee.”

Die Diablo, Die (Yardie4 - REMOVED)[]
This mission was originally intended to set up the rivalry between the Yardies and the Diablos, foreshadowing the events of Grand Theft Auto III.
King Courtney informs the Kid that the rival gang, the Diablos from Portland, are trying to expand their businesses into Yardie territory.
The Kid is tasked to go to the southwestern portion of Staunton Island, wipe out any Diablos gang member he can find, and retrieve one of his gang cars to King Courtney as proof of the job being done.
The player is rewarded with $10000 for completion.
Description:
“The Yardies rival gang, the Diablos, are starting to expand and area little too close for comfort. The Kid can do no wrong, so theYardies recruit him for the job: kill all the Diablos in the southwest portion of the island, and bring back one of their cars as proof.”

Pickpocket (Hidden10 - REMOVED)[]
Upon answering a payphone, an anonymous contact will hire the Kid to steal ten valuable shipments from their rivals and deliver them to his own shop.
The player is rewarded with $20,000.
Description:
“It appears that someone needs some items to disappear from their competitors and reappear in their shop. Sounds like a perfect job for the Kid.”
Brief:
“Hey, we could use some help if you're interested in pocketing a little extra cash. All of our competitor's stores got a very valuable shipment this morning that we could use. Go steal all of the shipments, then bring them back here. Make sure you bring them all back at once — our biggest client wants them at our “corporate” rate.”
Special circumstances:
“Player must steal all 10 shipments before returning to the drop-off location.”

Army Surplus Missions[]
Phil Cassidy's Army Surplus description in the Design Document suggests that Phil Cassidy was originally intended to give missions to the player (presumably smaller side-missions) in order to unlock heavy weapons for purchase at his store. These activities and his weapon shop were not included in the final version.
“[...] As well as providing the player with valuable jobs, Phil also offers a range of weapons unavailable at any Ammu-Nation. These are the most powerful weapon and are only made available once Phil's missions are completed. [...]”

ROM Leftovers[]
Found in the game files are unused variables for five missions given by Joey Leone ("start_joey*") and five missions given by Carlo ("playerstart_carlo*"). Carlo's mission variables are listed between the variables for Reg & Ned missions, suggesting his missions were tied to Vinnie's mission strand in some way. Carlo's fifth mission involves wiring a car ("wirethecar_carlo5").
Carlo is suggested to be a very late addition to the storyline, as his only mention in the entire Design Document is on the "Art Requirements" page, meaning his character artwork did not exist as of February 2003.[3]
Moreover, unused mission briefing for seven different missions can be found in the game files.
