This subpage documents removed, unused and changed locations and props during the development of Grand Theft Auto Advance.
Outsourced by Rockstar North to Digital Eclipse, the developer's original plan was to create a nearly 1:1 recreation of Grand Theft Auto III's Liberty City, including all familiar building structures.[1] However, due to the Game Boy Advance's hardware limitation, the project was limited to Grand Theft Auto 2-style 5-faced building models. Theoretically, building models with more than five faces would lower the game's framerate below the final version's already low FPS.
Gameplay features tied to the following unused buildings were also scrapped, including a subway system and Phil's Army Surplus.[2] A few unique structures following the same design as the removed buildings survived the final cut of the game, such as the Greasy Joe's Cafe sign and Belleville Park structures.
As the unused smaller objects reused across all three islands are technically treated as terrain sections, they will be listed in the section below.
Removed/Unused Location Structures[]
Similarly to the sprites and tiles storage system in the 2D Universe titles, the game features three files, one for each area of Liberty City (Portland, Staunton Island and Shoreside Vale), each containing 401 objects (IDs 0 to 400). Some of the objects are unique to each area file, while others can be found in all three different files (such as the billboards, trees and the final version's buildings).
