— Ammu-Nation commercial

The name Ammu-Nation is a portmanteau of ammunition and nation, which implies that the store is patriotic. The store is run with a right-wing paranoia philosophy, describing itself as the "store leading the fight against communism". The store also seems to promote the purchase of its products for illegal purposes, even suggesting they be used to kill one's mother-in-law if she is "being a bitch".

It is implied that Ammu-Nation existed in the 1950s as a gun association with Derek the Dodo as a mascot to teach kids about gun safety, before Ammu-Nation has been rebranded as a firearms emporium in 1978.

Ammu-Nation's first chronological appearance in 1984. Derek the Dodo is still a mascot for the company, used to entice children into using guns at Saturday Safety Fun and to shift blame to "anti-gun zealots". Vice City Mambas football player José Pimsoll is also a supporter for Ammu-Nation.

In 1986, the store is giving away an anti-aircraft gun used by American army during the Australian-American War, and opened a shooting range featuring images of famous communists as targets. The Vice City Bureau of Investigation is currently investigating Ammu-Nation and other Hardware Stores around Vice City, with posters labelling them as "suspicious businesses" in their office.

In 1992, stores in the State of San Andreas are supported by the San Andreas Gun Association. In addition to ammunitions, the stores sells boxes of nails for nailguns. Many of the ammunition boxes found inside Ammu-Nation stores around San Andreas are static versions of ammunition items used in Rockstar North's Manhunt.

In the late 1990s, Ammu-Nation opened an online service at AmmuNation.net. Following the Y2K mass hysteria, Ammu-Nation began selling the "Strongest Will Survive" Y2K Kit exclusively on their website, which consisted of a tractor trailer full of Logger Beer, Redwood Cigarettes and enough fire power and ammunition to level a small country.

An unused Ammu-Nation radio commercial is featured on the promotional website for Grand Theft Auto III. It is an early version of the commercial heard in Grand Theft Auto: Vice City with a few differences:

  • "...featuring faces of famous liberal pinkos" replaced with "...featuring faces of famous commie pinkos"
  • "...actually used when we whooped Saddam's ass!" replaced with "...actually used when we whooped Australia's ass!"
  • "...free screenings of Enemy of the State and Red Dawn!" replaced with "...free screenings of the documentary Red Dawn!"

Shooting Range Sign[]

The Downtown Vice City store originally used an image of Ronald Reagan (President of the United States in the 1980s, mentioned multiple times in-game) shooting at an image of Mikhail Gorbachev (leader of the Soviet Union in the 1980s) using a Desert Eagle. The sign alludes to the description of the Ammu-Nation shooting ranges in the radio commercial, featuring faces of "famous Commie pinkos".

The level designers decided not to use the shooting range sign in the final version and, instead of removing it, they simply changed the X coordinate until it was moved behind the interior wall. The LOD texture for the Ammu-Nation interior still features the sign in the original location.

The sign can be visible using an exploit through weapons with First Person availability, allowing the player to see through walls.

As originally intended by the outsourced Digital Eclipse studio, the Ammu-Nation menu in Grand Theft Auto Advance was planned as a first-person view of the shop interior with Steve Frazer, the Ammu-Nation clerk, seen behind the counter.[1]

Unused Two-Floor Interior[]

A two-floor Ammu-Nation store interior is left unused in-game, featuring a working Shooting Range challenge starting point and Ammu-Nation ambience sound. The interior is located on Interior World 7 at X: 315.3850, Y: -142.2420 , Z: 999.6010.

Unused Area[]

In the PlayStation 2 version, two of the existing Ammu-Nation interiors (the Downtown Los Santos and Queens branches) have a large, inaccessible empty room located next to the shooting range, behind the door at the side of the room. This, along with unused targets of characters from GTA III, implies that an extra shooting range challenge, similar to the one featured in The Shootist/Rifle Range in GTA Vice City, was planned at some point in development. This room was cut in all subsequent ports.[2]

Normally, the room can only be seen from the outside by using a jetpack to navigate all the way to the interior. The ceiling can only be seen from certain angles, becoming fully invisible if it is landed on. The ceiling, walls and floor are all solid, indicating that the room was not a last minute addition. Looking from the room towards the shooting range, a space may be seen in a wall from certain angles, instead of the door that can be properly seen if looking from the shooting range towards the empty room.

C-J Dick's Manhunt Props[]

Aside from the other existing Manhunt items found as props in the Ammu-Nation interiors, other additional items were ported by Rockstar North prop artist Campbell-John Dick to be used as static props in interiors, including the Sawn Off Shotgun, Baseball Bat with Spikes, Heavy Sniper, Defender Mark 1 Assault Rifle (a duplicate of this model is used as a cutscene prop), MP5K, the Painkillers and the Pistol Ammo item.
